Hello Clive and welcome. I used to build model boats, sailing ones mainly and then started on steam engines but never got around to combining them!

Hi Clive welcome to the forum. There's loads of boat people on here and steam engines by the boat load, just ask and someone will be able to help with suggestions. I recently made my first boiler for a small engine and the information on it was very helpful on pressure testing, silver soldering, and size to make was very useful on here. You could also join a local group who could give help on machining materials and testing.

As mentioned in your thread on Mayhem the Miranda engine while nice in its own right is out of proportion for the hull and the boiler out of proportion to the engine. I suggest you look around for a smaller v-twin oscillator which would match the boiler if gas fired. There have been a few beginners oriented threads on here that have links to websites with multiple free engine plans which will probably have one suitable. Also allow for some reduction gearing to the prop. so that you can run a scale one. Later you can build a more scale engine like a Reeves Marcher that will look bertter in an open launch.
If you want the build simplicty and rapidity or a model aircraft you might also look initially at a simple hard chine sheet built boat rather than plank on frame.
