Greetings, buy a set of soft jaws to suit your chuck, and use those.

regards

Well it's NOT the ubiquitous Sanou/Feurda 'K12' 100mm because I've just put my vernier on a jaw and the dimensions are different.....However;..... A set of jaws is likely to be quite expensive whereas the said K12 is an inexpensive chuck...due to the hated jaw changing ceremony I'm currently thinking about buying another chuck so that I can just change the chuck on the lathe.... Curent price for K12 (which apart from jaw changing is quite a nice chuck) is about £46 from Arc.

I can change the jaws on my Colchester lathe in a few moments but for some reason the little K12 jaws are a bugger!

What lathe are you using this on?

If you fancy a challenge Howard Hall has a page about making Soft Jaws It nicely explains how to cut the teeth.

Knowing how to measure the scroll and teeth could be useful for identifying ready made jaws too.

I think that the Polish Toolmex and Bison 100mm chucks look to be front runners. The EN10 soft jaws have a 6mm scroll pitch and a 6mm slot width. There are so many variations in the size of chuck jaws that it really is a lottery as to whether you can get what you want.

This ebay listing has a chart giving more detailed sizes for the Polish hard jaws:

Such a wealth of information, thank you to all,it’s looking very much like a...EN10. Also as a novice,I have now learnt what soft jaws are! All of your feedback is much appreciated.Regards.
