I have just purchased on of these machines with the intention of using it for sharpening milling cutters and drills. I managed to get it for just £40. I can see how to use it, but, to help things on their way does anyone have a manual for this machine and can anyone offer any tips or suggestions as to its use and/or any suggestions for accessories or fittings that will improve its "usability".

Thanks

Martin

This video looks has a bit of useful information at the start https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9PdSm88Z3M .

This one shows sharpening a screw cutting tool at around 14 minutes in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYGat3WkRyQ .  Not sure about how correct using the back of an ordinary grinding wheel is but clearly it works if done with care.  One great thing about a Tiplap is the ease of setting up the clearance angles in two planes.

Probably best considered as being halfway between the Deckle / Alexander / clone style that is fundamentally designed for engraving cutters with extra capability something of an afterthought and the Quorn which, frankly, is too clever by half for normal folk.

As you know the basic operation is to oscillate the cutter being ground across the cup wheel with a tipping motion.

So the art is to get the face being ground in line with the cup wheel face.

It is, as the name suggests, a lapping machine rather than grinder so you need to have the basic shape first.

Clive,

Many thanks for the information. I had tried a few Google searches but they mostly turned up machines that were (or had been) being auctioned, I never thought of looking at youtube for info.

My machine has only the basic clamp arrangement that is fitted early on in the videos, and even then its missing the screws and the clamp bars, although it won't take long to make a set.

Having seen the collets and the indexable spindle that was shown I now have a plan forming to use my MT3 ER32 chuck and a few other bits along with square and hexagonal blocks to make a tool holder that will allow me to sharpen 2,3,4 and even 6 sided tools.

Just need to get on and do it now......

Thanks again

Martin

P.S. If anyone has a manual for the machine I'd still love to have a copy.

That is a bargain!

I missed out a few years ago on one for £25! Even worse, one place I worked had a few "unused" ones, that were chucked during a "5S" clean up!! (Anyone who has worked in engineering during the last 25 years, will no doubt, have a similar tale!).

A long time ago, there was an article on converting a Tip Lap into a Cutter Grinder.

Needless to say, I cannot find it!

Can anyone find it to help the OP? It was a long time ago, in MEW as I recall.

I also have a Boremaster. I bought it at the Midlands show 4 years ago. It cost a lot more than 40 quid, but did come with most accessories and a manual. I believe the Quorn was based on this machine. I have fitted a dished diamond disc to mine. The MEW article is here :-

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.haythornthwaite.com/Adjustable%2520Grinding%2520Head.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjg_fSlkdDvAhVLShUIHXt2BegQFjASegQIDhAC&usg=AOvVaw0t0LlsA-Pk4xAUjBOfm55O

Unfortunately, mine didn't come with the drill sharpening head, so I am trying to make something using ER collets.

I can email a copy of the manual if you still require this information.

Andy(dextrous?) - if you are able, I would appreciate a copy of the manual, also. Happy to add a nominated charity contribution plus any costs.

Thanks to Andydextrous for the offer of a copy of the manual. I've had the machine for more than a year now and have made a few modifications to it to make it more use as a drill/cutter grinder rather than a dresser for lathe tools.

I made a new mount to make the motor spindle take a cup grinding wheel rather than the original diamond dressing wheel ( the diamond wheel was intended for dressing lathe tools and took too long to take a chip out of a damaged drill or cutter). I mounted the wheel guard further forwards to make it cover the deeper wheel.

To cope with the length of drills I moved the motor back (by approx 150mm) by adding a piece of 120 x 10mm plate between the mount and the motor.

To hold drills and cutters I bought an MT3 sleeve with a parallel outer and then bored a length of 50mm square bar and a length of 50mm hex bar to suit the sleeve. The square and hex have a big washer on one end to provide a register on the side of the tiplap "table" and a grub screw to hold the sleeve in the correct orientation for grinding (to suit the tang of the drill being ground).

I can now use an MT3 chuck, or an MT3 collet chuck to hold ordinary drills and cutters or taper shank drills can be held directly or via reducing sleeves

The orientation of the drill/cutter can be set using the grub screw and then turning the square or hex bar each cutting face can be ground in turn.

I thought that I would have to make a clamp system to hold the parts being ground but I soon found that I could simply hold the square/hex in place by hand as the cutter is being ground.

I hope this helps anyone trying to modify/use one of these machines for cutters/drills. I'll take some photos if anyone needs or wants them.

I am surprised so many people are following this old thread. I'll get my scanner going and see what I can do.

As I seem to be the only person with a manual, I'll see if I can put it on the club website for posterity.

It isn't a very exciting manual I'm afraid, so don't get your hope's too high. It is a lapping machine after all. I have found the Quorn manual useful.

There is one of these machines at work, I'd be grateful if I could get a copy too.

You should try David Haythornthwaite's web site, (Haythornethwaite.com.) He wrote an article on using a tiplap grinder.

I have now emailed a copy of the manual to everyone who sent me their email address.

So that it available long term, I have since rescanned it using different software, so that the quality is better.

I have posted it on the Weymouth and District Model Engineers website under the project pages.
