Thread: What did you do today? 2023
02/05/2023 13:54:22

Those ceramic inserts are a nightmare. Our kitchen tap went a while ago so I removed the cartridge and popped along to the builders merchants to buy a replacement - or so I thought! I showed him my cartridge and the chap behind the counter brought out a board with about 40 different cartridges plugged into holes - "Does it look like any of those?" In short - no it didn't. Apparently there is no standard and every manufacturer makes them differently. Beware the splines - I though I'd found the perfect one and fitted it only to find that the tap handle wouldn't fit - wrong number of splines on the spindle and it was too long. I wound up using the ceramic bits of a new one with the brass bits of the original which worked for a while. Remember when a tap washer cost a couple of pence - that's progress for you!

Thread: Clarkson 4" Hi-flow cutter
01/03/2023 18:48:30

As far as I'm aware there are at least 2 types of dedlock chuck and cutter - the 150 and 200 types which have different threads. I have a 40 international dedlock chuck (200 type) and several cutters but I have a Harrison mill which takes 30 Int tooling and I can't find any chucks that size which take the 200 size cutter. Can anyone confirm whether the 30 Int type was available in both sizes or only the 150 size cutters. If anyone has a 30 Int chuck for sale or swap please let me know.

Thread: Nitrous Oxide Cylinder
22/12/2022 22:57:22

Comment about them exploding in the council crusher reminded me of a visit to my local scrapyard many years ago. They had just bought a new crusher - huge thing, 20-30 foot long- took several cars at a time and made cubes of them or shredded steel like it was toffee. Anyway, couple of weeks after they got it they were crushing a car and thought it must have had a gas cylinder in the boot. It exploded under pressure and you wouldn't believe the damage. The main hydraulic cylinder was like a banana and all the others were damaged. Like in the Michael Cain film "it blew the b----y doors off!" The whole thing had to be sent back to Belgium to be rebuilt at a cost of £40,000.

So, lesson for today - don't put gas cylinders in the crusher.

Thread: Pultra 10mm collet closing torque
14/09/2022 18:43:26

I may be "misremembering" if that's a word, but I think that BCA produced specific collets for milling which were internally threaded near the tail (like a Clarkson autolock collet) to prevent pull out while milling. That would reduce the required holding torque of the collet itself.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Rather than hitting the chuck key to loosen the chuck which tends to knacker the holes, I use a big allen key in the chuck. Lock the chuck on the short end and hit the long end with a lump of wood. Works for me but, I like the idea of the impact driver.

Tried to contact the original poster but no response so I've placed an ad in the classifieds for a really nice toolchest from the workshop of a clockmaker - I'm helping to clear his stuff for the widow.

Just a thought- could it be something to do with the direction the fan is rotating. Rotating in different directions might shift the direction of load and if there is significant end float it could affect things.

Thread: Disposable Gas Bottles
16/01/2021 13:54:57

I can understand why scrappiest don't like gas bottles. A few years ago I was round there for a nosey round and saw they had just installed a brand new car crusher at huge cost. Literally a few weeks later I noticed that it was gone and they were using the old one again. Apparently, a car had come in with a hidden gas bottle in the boot. Went in the crusher and bang. It blew the front off the crusher and bent all the hydraulic rams like bananas. Had to go back to Belgium to be rebuilt at a cost of £100 grand. So their care with gas bottles is well justified and now they insist they are cut in half.

Thread: Coronavirus death stats
14/01/2021 14:02:58

Don't want to get into statistics( I did enough of that at work) but I was involved for many years with clinical trials. It may seem ridiculous to record all deaths I.e. Someone getting knocked down by a bus or having a heart attack but when you are looking for possible side effects you need to record everything- what if the drug (or virus) doesn't kill you or even makes you very sick but messes with your eyesight or makes you a bit dopey ( very scientific, I know) such that you walk out in front of a bus without looking. It might even make you suicidal so that you do it deliberately. When it happens to one person, it may be chance but if you find it happening regularly then you need to investigate and hopefully do something about it.

Thread: Where do the parcels go ?
10/01/2021 16:15:22

Had an interesting experience re parcels being delivered by someone other than who you thought. Before Christmas we sent several parcels- one to London and another to Hastings went very reasonably via parcel 2 go and UPS. Tried to do the same with a similar one to Aberdeen and they tried to slap on a "remote destination surcharge" of £20. Honest- Aberdeen is not all that remote. Anyway, I took it down to the Post Office and sent it for a couple of pounds more than the UPS price but when I told the chap about the UPS surcharge, I was flabbergasted to find out that UPS actually get the Post Office to deliver for them up there! So beware.

Thread: Rewiring Li ion battery
21/12/2020 18:03:11

There's no sense in asking for advice if you're not prepared to take it so I shall heed all the warnings and wait until I can get hold of a proper charger. It is annoying, however, that manufacturers don't have any common standard. I have two different Lidl power tools and now an additional battery, all li ion and all nominally 20v but with a requirement for three different chargers. I assume it's just another marketing ploy but I may be wrong - manufacturers may have our best interests at heart and be playing safe.

thanks again for all the advice and concern and can I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy (and safe) Christmas.

21/12/2020 16:02:12

Thanks for all the replies so far and the concern for my future well being. I'm very careful with charging batteries and never leave chargers on overnight or when I'm not in the house which is why I thought I would ask on the forum before doing anything and I'm quite prepared to throw this in the bin if it's not a safe proposition.

I thought it might be feasible because the other Lidl chargers I have seem to be just a plug in dc power supply with a connector to the battery and all the electronics to control the charging is all part of the battery pack as I showed in the photo. It was the fact that this battery had four terminals rather than the three in my other batteries which was confusing me.

thanks again.

21/12/2020 13:06:50

I was in Lidl last week and spotted a pile of 20v Li ion batteries at half price but there were no chargers. Being Scottish I couldn't resist as I've been thinking for a while about getting a new battery for a small circular saw which has a defunct Ni cad battery. I have several 20v chargers for Li iion batteries but they have different terminal configurations (using the + terminal plus another between the +ve and -ve terminals. This one has both +ve and -ve at the outside plus 2 other charging terminals in between. I've attached a photo of the battery with the cover off to show the terminals and the charging circuit. I assume that I just connect 20v DC across the 2 inner terminals to charge and use the outer ones to connect to the saw. Can someone with more knowledge of these things please confirm (or tell me I'm being stupid!) thanks.

Thread: Type identification of a endmill tool holder (Hauser)
21/12/2020 12:55:09

sdc10997(1).jpgGreat to see the photos and the info that some of these machines were designed specifically for Woolwich Arsenal. The two that I was given both came from Ferranti's in Manchester and may have been engaged on War work as while both have the Hauser badge (one brass and the other more a chrome appearance) one has a MOD badge as well. I assume they both came from the same batch as all the individual castings are numbered (one no 10 and the other No 11). As you can see, they were in pretty poor condition when I got them with one more or less complete and the other missing the milling carriage (I've since found some of it) so I need to do some extensive repainting and fettling. Fun project if we have a new lockdown!

Can I suggest to the moderator that it might be a good idea to rename this thread to "Hauser mill" as info one these machines is difficult to find and a better title would make life easier for someone doing a search.sdc11208(1).jpg

15/12/2020 12:00:42

Cracked it! I was looking online last night for M8 x 0.75 bolts or something cheap to confirm that the end stop thread on my Hauser mill really was as I had measured and I kept getting ads for a small chuck to fit on the spindle of a Dremel or similar grinder. Off I went and after unscrewing the nose collet closer I had a perfect M8 x 0.75 threaded spindle which is a perfect fit for my end stops. I can only assume that Hauser used different threads in different models or different dates to explain the difference between mine and Stuart's. I also managed to finally find one supplier ba-bolts.co.uk who supply the appropriate threaded rod.

thanks to everyone for the help.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to thank people for responding but I wanted to get my thread gauge out and check things very carefully.

thanks for taking the time Stuart to measure all those threads. It's all tucked away for future use. The one that I can't make fit is the slide end stop which on yours is M8 x 0.5.but on mine fits better with M8 x 0.75 with my thread gauge. I can't find any studding that size or a bolt to try it but if all else fails I'll get a tap from Tracy. It's great that they have all these taps so thanks for that pointer.

Pete- thanks for thinking of me and a shame that yours are P10 rather than P9 - what uses a P10 collet?

I had a quick look at the French Savoie site where I got a couple of collets- it looks as though he no longer sells to the UK - BREXIT presumably.

thanks again to everyone Sandy
