Does anyone know what these scissors are intended for?

Wife served an apprenticeship as a tailoress, worked in a court tailors, says she has never seen scissors like the illustrated ones for buttonholes, they always used scissors that were short with very thin blades for buttonholes.

definitely button hole scissors. The ratchet can be set to limit the length of the button hole. They are used when making hand sewn button holes as opposed to machine made ones (I think). Our pair (Hardly used) have a long threaded screw which limits the length of the cut.

HERE YOU GO, but i think they were also supplied by Post Office Telephones for engineers to use when working on cotton covered cables. That's where mine came from anyway, when I inherited a predecessor's tool kit.

Your button hole scissors have a small rachet stop for setting the cut length of the hole. Other models used a screw through one arm to set the cut.

They are not mine, but the chap that owns them will be pleased to know. He has had them for years and has always wondered what they were for.

I have a pair here that were used by mum's aunt who was a glove maker. The adjusting screw is missing, and I doubt if I have one that fit in my collection of thousands.
