Hi

I was watching an interesting YouTube video on modifying a 5” gauge GWR directly imported Chinese made loco (14xx). The YouTuber has kept the price a secret.

The build quality is good but there are some areas for improvement hence why it’s being modified.

Any ideas how much one of these would cost? I have looked all over google and can’t find it. I know Silvercrest does them but they are quite expensive and directly imported ones are cheaper.

Simon,

Can youplease post a link to the loco so we can see what you are talking about. My initial search on Youtube did not show anything.

I urge you to forget it, Simon. A friend bought a 4MT direct from China and it needs a huge amount of work to make it run, re-engineering really. As he is not a model engineer, he is paying another member to do the work, but one problem leads to another, and the repairer is tearing his hair out with frustration. It won't end up cheap, and it won't happen quickly.

I personally wouldn't even try and import direct from China. I have no idea how much a loco of this scale would cost anyway, but if things go wrong it's a long way to send it back or even deal with by email ( language problem as well).

Silvercrest Kingscale models are very good value and you have a full 12 month warranty, they even do a buy back scheme. I'm not sure what the original poster considers expensive, but if you consider the 4MT for instance, which I think was about £8000, just price up a boiler; castings and all other materials including paint and lining. Factor in the probable two year wait for the boiler, and then price up your build time! OK, you won't price up the time it takes you to build it, but you'd have a shock if you used commercial rates. Buying a ready to run model saves a lot of time.

I'm in no way connected to Silver Crest, but I have seen their models in the flesh and running.

Simon,

Cannot help you with a price but the following may be of interest. It is of course a calculated guess you understand as I have no connection with any of the people or brands mentioned below!

The model Keith Appleton was modifying was probably made by the Wuhu Brands Arts & Crafts Co. Ltd. in Anhui Province, China. They have a brand called Bowande which is their division for live steam models.

On the Alibaba website for Wuhu there is a direct link to their website www.bowandeusa.com.

On that website under dealers they list two in England:

Bowande Live Steam UK Ltd., Rickmansworth. They exhibit at exhibition in the UK.

The other dealer is Kingscale, Braunston, Northamptonshire. Kingscale is of course the trading name for live steam locos from Silver Crest Models.

Keith Appleton makes it clear in a disclaimer that the model he modified is not a Kingscale or Silvercrest model but was bought directly from the manufacturer in China and delivered to Blackgates Engineering.

Station Road Steam sold a 14xx “manufactured in China by Silver Crest Models” in 2017. It was new in 2016 . Their description is worth reading! Especially the warranty conditions!!

Interestingly all the pictures show a loco numbered 1466 and I am sure the GWR built more than one.

If you are so inclined Simon I will leave you to join up the dots!

Best to read the actual warranty described in the terms and conditions on the Silvercrest websiite. Station Road Steam have got it wrong.

I advise anyone considering buying a ready to run model to have a chat with someone who actually owns one, that way you'll get an honest appraisal, not just someone's opinion. There are several around the UK at various clubs, in Gauge1 and larger. In my club we have Silver Crest and Bowande models.

I repeat, I have no connection with either suppliers.
