boiler parts

can anyone please tell me what this is for ? it came with a box of boiler parts . Some sort of valve ? But with no outlet , and should there be a ball to seat on the conical part ?

Difficult to be sure with the size of the picture but it looks like it should be a captive blow down valve. Ball goes in the shroud at the end of the spindle which gets forced onto the seat in the body when the spindle is tightened. Back nut is to stop you screwing it all the way out!

hello , sounds about right , but where does the water / steam exit ?

Through a hole and pipe extension off the side, not yet drilled and fitted! Looks like it was left once the turning was completed and never finished!

i agree with 34046 Blow down valve. Ball missing from the seat.

Here's the parts for a complete valve of this style:

If you add an O ring on the valve spindle just under the retaining nut, you will not get any steam blowing out around the spindle when you blow down. Just make sure you open the valve enough to squeeze the O ring.

Don't drill for the exhaust until you've screwed it into place and marked which way it should point. No shimming to get the thing clocked.

Good tip Pete! In fact, the same goes for all fittings that screw into something and must have a specific orientation.

In the same box were these bits , found out the water gauge is a very expensive part ! I take it the others are injectors ?

Yes, the two fittings at the top of the photo are for a water gauge. The two fittings in the lower half of the photo, I am not sure what they are. If they are injectors, they are unlike any that I have seen. No doubt someone else will be able to identify these.

To me, they like as though they could the bottom fittings of more water gauges. The larger diameter threaded stub has a flat bottom recess which would take the bottom end of the gauge glass. The long threaded stub would thread into the boiler and have a locknut to secure in position once lined up. The tufnol? headed spindles could be shut off valves.

They seem to be lefthand and righthand fittings of a matched pair.

Could be totally wrong of course!

Have you got a photo of the other side of the fittings?

John , I am sure you are right , now I have lined them up a different way , they must me water gauge fittings . Missing the unions for the glass glands and missing the valve needle for he drain . They both have steam shut off valves . . They seem a bit complicated though . They might be OK for a small boiler
