Does anyone know if Arrand boring heads have replaceable arbours? If so does anyone know if they have a common thread?

Regards,

Andrew.

Hi,

the 3” head uses M14x1

the 4.5” and 5.25” use 16mm x 1.5mm, the shanks are the same as their fly cutters.

the 6” I don’t know.

the 6.5”, 8” boring and facing and 10.5” all use the same shanks but these are held on by a register and 4 shcs.

Are Arrand boring heads still made ? I was looking for one last year and wanted an arrand, could not see much online about them. Bought an American made head instead and its good. Most of the asian made heads i have used seem to use a mystery measuring system on the dial.

Thanks Steve, I might have expected that it was more complicated!

Andrew.

I recall that it was essentially a one-man operation. He tried to sell the business when he retired but I don't think it continued. I may be wrong.

Hello Andrew and Steve,

Just to complete the list, my boring head is 3.25 inches and the arbour on that is interchangeable with that of the fly cutter bought at the same time.

Thank you Michael G for snuffing out a hopefully live phone number to this excellent company, I am another fully satisfied user for >25 years

Hi,

I should have been clear about the sizes; those are the names that Arrand gave the different models. Based around the maximum bore using a side tool. From the catalogue the outside diameters of the heads are:

the 3” head 1.3/8” or 35mm

the 4.5” 1.3/4” or 44mm

The 5.25” 2.1/8” or 54mm

the 6” 2.1/2” or 63mm

the 6.5” 2.3/4” or 70mm

8” boring and facing 3.1/2” or 89mm

10.5” 4” or 102mm

The catalogue I have does not mention a 3.25” head.

AFAIK Arrand does not manufacture any more but still trades selling from stock. I purchased my 3” head a few weeks ago direct from Arrand.I think rotagrip have some of the heads in stock according to their website.

Today I visited the Clock Fair at Midland Motorcycle Museum. Whilst there I managed to pick up a brand new, still in the box, Arrand 4 1/2" boring head. It is not fitted with an arbor. I am trying to work out what thread it is. This post implies they are M16x1.5. This one certainly is not. The box is marked Imp (I guess for Imperial) and I assume this is for the graduation scale. It would appear to be 5/8" but not sure what TPI.

Does anyone have any other ideas. I would like to fit it to an R8 arbor for use on the big mill.

Thanks,

Colin

What makes you feel it is 5/8" rather than 16mm as there is 0nly 0.1mm difference between the two which would be hard to measure.

Cannot get a M16 x 1.5 tap to thread in. It struggles to fit into the spigot bore.

Screw a 5/8 dia. piece of wooden dowel into it. The threads will imprint on the wood and then you can measure pitch or tpi with a thread gauge.

Just had another play with it. Managed to find a new No.2 Second M16x1.5 tap and this did eventually thread in. There is a tommy bar hole and also a small threaded hole which both break into the thread before the thread has completed two turns. The bottom tap I had tried did not want to go past this point. I was being too gently. The number 2 tap has left a good witness mark in the spigot bore but got past the break in points and then threaded in nicely.

Just need to put M16x1.5 thread on an R8 arbor now.

Thanks

Colin

DC31k,

That's an idea I'd not thought of. Must remember for future.

Jason,

Thanks for that. At £9.58 plus postage its not worth switching the lathe on. One arbor just ordered.

Thank you,
