Cam Calc

Is there a easy way to get Cam Calc to work with a up to date browser firefox or opera.Thanks Graham

Does it require a flash or java plug-in?

Hello Neil when i press the calculate button on cam calc it comes up that the browser does not recognise the applet and a search on firefox says after version 53 it will not let java and i presume flash work.I have a old computer that runs vista and firefox will not let that connect to the internet.Graham

Which Cam Calc do you mean Graham? A quick search on the web found one belonging to Westmer, previously available as a program, now only available as a programming service, POA.

There's another discussed on ModelEngineerMaker that looks to have gone through various implementations, some of which are certain dead-ends.

Or this web-based effort, which is hasn't been updated for 11 years and wants long obsolete versions of Internet Explorer or Firefox2. I tried it and it works OK up until it tries to load a Java applet, which it can't find. That's certainly because <APPLET> is itself obsolete and modern browsers only respond to it by throwing a warning message. The current HTML language reference says:

"Important Note:

There is now very limited applet support in most modern browsers, as they no longer support the NPAPI plugin required for showing Java applets. This page exists as a reference only."

It was possible to reactivate NPAPI in Firefox53 as a temporary fix, but NPAPI was discontinued entirely in Firefox54 about 18 months ago. I'm on Firefox 66.

It might be possible to get it working on an up-to-date computer by loading Firefox53, how to installing older versions here. I wouldn't bother, could be a lot of computer hacking with no result. Though CADCALC should work OK if you can find a computer that hasn't been updated for a few years, this CADCALC really needs to be re-written.

... but I also notice that it was last updated in 2007 and browser-related issues are mentioned.

Hi Dave thanks it was the old web based one that i was trying to get to work as it is the one that is used in the build in the building of the whippet. I tried to get a early version of firefox to run in a sandbox but did not work.I will just have to build the eccentric jig and hope for the best.Sorry Michael yes that is the one my habit of putting in spaces when it does not need it Thanks Graham

CamCalc was originally my program, written in GWBasic and published in SIC. Model Engineering News picked it up and Ron Chernich wrote the web friendly version. I have written a version for EXCEL which is available from my Dropbox here

If you do not have EXCEL on your computer then the program works fine on the free version of EXCEL available via Microsoft's OneDrive. Most of the program also runs on Google Sheets but the cam drawing bit doesn't work so you can't see if the parameters you have entered give a nonsensical solution.

I'm committed to a social weekend unfortunately, but a quick look at the code suggests it might be fairly easy to convert into something that will work. No promises because there may be hidden complexities and I don't understand the maths but I'll see what can be done later. What platform are you on, Windows, or Linux?

PS Typical, no sooner do I press send than I see Roderick posting he's the original author and already has an Excel port - if you'd said Windows, that's probably what I'd have used!

Thanks Rod i will have another look on sunday if microsoft can fix a update bug that causes my computer to have the blue screen of death and go into load then work for 30 seconds then shut down. Today it has worked most off the day.Thanks Graham

I had the exact same issue when I was trying to cut the camshaft for my Hoglet a few months ago. I downloaded the version for Excel and it worked fine. Great programme.

The latest Microsoft update clashes with some anti-virus programs.

Work around is to start up in safe mode, disable your AV and enable Windows Defender until they ship the fix.

Is the CamCalc spreadsheet available? Would be much appreciated as I'm looking to hand code a camshaft for cutting on my 4th axis and this would be a huge time saver.

its for Bob Roach's P&W Wasp Jr in 1/6th scale - I'm believe I've heard the program is for "normal" cams but even having it to play with as a starting point I can try and modify the output to work for me.
