Lathe bed regrinding

Hi,

I have an old clockmakers? Type lathe with a badly worn bed. Anyone able to offer any advice on where I can get it reground? As you can see, no complications like leadscrew to deal with. Just a simple bed with a flat and a 'v' section.

Hi,Does the compound slide move along the bed or is it clamped down.

If the latter, then does it matter if the bed is worn? The only time this could be a problem is when you are turning a part longer than the travel of the topslide.

Hi matt,

No, the compound doesn't travel so I can work with it as it is. However, the wear means the tailstock is always slightly out of alignment and I cannot move the compound and keep any sort of accuracy. Also, I feel that if I am going to the trouble of tarting it up,I might as well look into regrinding!

Not used them myself but Slideway Services ? have been mentioned before. I believe they are Nuneaton based in the West Midlands.

Slideway services have been recommended to me as well.

Unfortunately, the proprietor of Slideway Services has now retired. Fortunately, there is another firm close by (and I cannot remember the name just now), to whom details of enquirers are sent. I hope to have my Tom Senior slideways reground by them soon. They were very helpful on the phone.

Hello Barnabas - You may not to tie yourself down to grinding alone - my ancient Grayson flat bed was flycut on a SIP jig borer many years ago. It made a lovely job of it! I would add that the bed was close grained cast iron and unhardened. The bloke who did it for me said it was the best cast iron he had ever machined.

I did think it could just be machined rather than ground. Anyone happen to know a place in Cornwall I could ask? Any members in Cornwall with a ruddy great mill who could help me? I have sent an email to slideway services (no mention of closure on their website) so we will see what comes.

Have you nipped up the tailstock ram clamp quite firmly? I have a T&LM precision and that showed the tailstock about 15thou out till I clamped the ram tighter than normal one day - suddenly it all trued up.
