New member from Canada BC, I bought an older lathe two months ago which is an m type Drummond..

Really happy with what I bought and now I just need to learn how to use it 😁

Welcome. Just one piece of advice. Before you power up, thoroughly check it for freedom of movement. Do your best to find a copy of the owners manual. Buy a good training manual, if necessary one for any lathe of comparable size. The manual will provide you with generic safety and operation information. My learning curve took about 6 months. Good Luck.

Welcome Adrian. My first lathe was also an 'M' type Drummond and I had many happy hours on that making things.

You will find information about your lathe here;

Hi Adrian I have an M type lathe like you although i have done a few mods to mine like just pluging the first jole in the bed to prevent small parts disappearing to fitting a quick changed toolpost. It's worth having a look in my photos to see results and ideas.

Hello Bill, I diid go over the lathe with some good quality oil and checked everting was moving as it should be before i turned the motor over.. I did find the back gear would not stay engaged but thats now not a problem after some good use..
i bought the Amateur's lathe book about 4 years ago and must of read it about 20 times over but like you say its going to take sometime to put that into practice

HI David, i really like the look of your M type so I'm sure i will be asking you some questions as i can already see a few modifications I would like to make to mine.. That plug is a really good idea and one i will do this weekend..
I bought a copy of Model Engineers workshop last month because it had plans to make tool holders, that could well be my first project and along with the other projects that i will need to make to make them

Having read that book,it,s just a matter of putting it into practice,you can,t go too far wrong,it,s all solid advice.

Just be warned !! Once you start,there,s no going back,you,re HOOKED !!

All that aside,you have a nice little machine and I wish you many happy hours with it.

Have fun .

PS Make sure to get a big bucket for the swarf,you might be surprised how fast it mounts up !

Welcome to the swarf making addicts club! LOTS of help and advice on here, plus some banter!

The more that you use the machine, the more things that you will find that you can do with it, Some of which, at one time, you would never have thought possible!

Howard
