Hi all

Does anyone know where I can get (or the size I need), soft jaws for the 5" chuck on the clarkes Lathe (CL500M). I asked Clarkes and they don't know (figures).

surely it's standard.

Thank you.

Simon

You could try Rotagrip, they do softjaws for some of the imported chucks and that is where I got mine. They start at the bottom of the 2nd page and carry on on the next

No, You will need to measure your existing jaws and see if there is a matching size, or give them a ring and they may know what fits.

Remove the jaws and carefully measure them, including the pitch of the teeth. Also measure the chuck diameter, is it 5" or 125mm? Post the dimensions and keep your fingers crossed.

Hi Mart

I'd say the Chuck is 51/8" and pitch seems to be 6mm with (3mm gap & 3mm teeth)

Stamp reads: 7230 if that means anything.

Hows my luck?

It'd be helpful to know the width and slot dimensions.. ..If it's any help, the Warco 125mm ('Fuerda' brand) chuck soft jaws are 6.1 mm pitch, 56mm long, 16mm wide and 45mm high, with an 8mm high slot.. ..the bottom of the slot is about 6.8 above the ends of teeth / top of scroll..

It's surprising how many people don't know what pitch means. Please measure from the FRONT of the first tooth to the FRONT of the last tooth, no.7. The chuck is likely 130mm. We need the width of the slot in the jaw and the width of the jaw. The number is a serial number and the chuck body should have it also, it has no other significance.

These are:

54mm long (not important)

16mm wide (same)

42mm high (not important)

bottom of slot to ends of teeth: 7mm (compared to 6.8) - do you have some that you could double check?

img_2.jpgimg_1.jpgimg_8.jpgimg_7.jpgI'd say your luck is pretty good.. ..the figures vary by some fraction of a mm here an' there, but mostly to do with holding calipers in one hand and camera in the other on the floor of a harshly-lit shed..

I'm too tired to work out the order & captions, so note that pitch is about 6.05, but they need to be a very free fit in the scroll, so that will be okay - they're also not the easiest things to measure, being curved.. 6.1 was from Warco's website, I got 36.32 over 6 teeth on the edges..

To keep things clearer, thought I'd add this bit last.. ..they're from Warco, listed on the invoice as Soft Jaw Set SJ-11-125; they aren't listed on the website as that, so it might be best to ring them, and in any case it'd be worth checking the price, probably £thirty-something.. They are made by 'Fuerda'. .img_9.jpg

Doing a bit more legwork this morning, Rotagrip's CC13 look like they'd also probably fit;

Thank you again for your efforts. Always nice to have options.
I wonder if any sellers at shows have these? They could shift a good few pairs if not greedy £££
