Hi all. I just wondered if theres a listing anywhere of who is where? Im based in Cranleigh near Guildford and Im new to machining anything having avoided metalwork fo the last 50 years... since making the proverbial cock-up in Mr Loves class at school!
Id like to meet like minded and more experienced individuals. If anyone knows how to PM through this site and wants to chat/share/advise please do.
Chers
Mike

Mike, there is no members directory, at least not one that I have found. If you click on the name at the top left of a post it will bring up the members profile IF they have one AND have made it public. Most seem to be left blank or private. Indeed your own profile if it exists does not show up if I click on your name. Mine on the other hand just points you at my website and if you look at Neils he "tells all"

It would be nice if all members could put a location in their profile. Not exact of course, just country and town.

It is and will always be up to individuals. Bear in mind that (a) many members here are not regular users of forums like this and (b) we are all regularly bombarded with warnings about sharing personal details.

A name, surname and town is enough to identify many people.

Hear, hear!

New members mostly give an indication of their whereabouts when introducing themselves; existing members who respond could encourage the new member to create a profile with location information.

If you do not give a hint as to where you are when you put out a cry for help, Forum Members who might otherwise offer to help you out, may well be (very) put off.

Imagine you are a new member of this forum.

They don't know any of the forum members and have no idea if they are fine upstanding folk or downright rotters.

I suspect very few new members will be joining the forum in the expectation of someone offering to come around and offer practical assistance, indeed they may well be taken aback by such an offer from a compete stranger.

I know the motivation for offering such help is with the best intentions, but I think it is fair to allow new forum members to find their feet before prompting them to 'reveal' their location.

Those who are confident to say where they are, often do so in the first few posts, those who aren't at first will often share the information when they have settled in.

Thanks all... Yes I'm new here and frankly hadn't found how to sort out a profile but I've found it now. I did outline my interests in my first post but the profile is the obvious place to put it. Thanks for link to Guildford model engineers.
