ME August 1977

A little while ago i picked up a bundle of ME mags dating back to 1977 these were not a complete lot but I am still pleased with those I got. Since then I scored more and some MEW too.

In flipping through them I came across ME 19-31 August 1977 Vol 143 No 3567

Seems even way back then publishing problems or more rightly printing problems were about.
The following 8 pages were not printed at all in the magazine page is blank.
P 923, P 926 & P 927, P930 & 931, P934 & 935, P938,

Not remembering how far back the forum archive went back I decided to check nope not a chance.

If anyone has a copy of this particular magazine I'd appreciate if they could let me know if for starters there was something printed on those pages.
IF ME doesn't mind possibly a PDF of the same pages please.

There certainly should be copy printed on those pages. In 1978, I ordered the 2-vol, bound 1977 issues directly from MAP. Since copyright is held by the successors of MAP, my sending you pdfs of the missing pages is not allowed without their permission. Your missing pages include articles on Walchaerts, Holmside loco, book reviews etc. One of the stockists of back numbers could probably supply you with a replacement.

I'm not quite clear on whether or not there was something you particularly wanted from the missing pages, or it is the fact that you got a random lot of magazines from 41 years ago, and just want the missing pages for posterity?

The digital ME archives only only go back to volume 187. It would be good if they could be updated with earlier copies.

I seriously doubt they would replace a my copy being I bought it for 50c funds which went to a local steam museums coffers the bundle of some 80 mags were donated to the group by a gents wife.

The jpeg portion of your post needs to be brought into a court of law being Libraries, government & private as well as the publishers a around the world store in many forms. Just take a look at the Archived magazines available on this forum OR for that matter each and every current issue of ME or MEW delivered and stored and retrieved every day by the publishing Co the distributor and those who subscribe to the digital version.
They breach their own statement!!!!

I don't think MyTimeMedia (successors to MAP's rights in ME) would object to someone sending Ray the missing pages as he has a legitimate copy.

I could be a right pain and point out that by reproducing the copyright notice without permission the terms in it have been broken

By common consent, UK Copyright Law “is a mess” and certainly not the most compelling subject for model engineers. Some key bits only then, before addressing the issue of Raymond Sanderson’s simple request.
Ownership: The individual who authored the work will exclusively own the work under the 1988 Copyright Act. Only the owner, or his exclusive licensee can bring proceedings in the courts.
Duration: 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the author of the work dies.
Restricted acts: It is an offence to copy the work without the consent of the owner.
Acts that are allowed -“Fair dealing”: A statutory definition for fair dealing does not exist. Generally, anyone wishing to copy an owner’s works for research or private study must do so themselves. However, other people can make a single copy on their behalf. Acceptable boundary for study: one article from an individual issue of a journal (even if the article is the entire journal issue).

The picture on the cover page of ME No. 3567 is attributed to a “Robin Russell”. He or his successors will own the copyright until 2047. Other articles not printed on Raymond’s pages include one from Martin Evans, who was then a “Technical Consultant” to MAP. Whether that means he or MAP or their respective successors own the work is not known to us. But under the precise terms of the Act, copying without their consent is an offence.
However, under the 1988 Act although “Fair dealing” is not defined, by custom and practice any one of us should have been able to make a single copy of those pages for Raymond “on his behalf” if it was for his private study. Whether my reproduced MAP “All Rights Reserved” statement negates that would be for the courts to decide.
Does it matter? Probably not, the likelihood of litigation in this case is negligible.
A far more serious issue for authors & publishers is the blatant copying of books being offered for sale on non-UK websites.

Well I can now announce I'll soon have a 4 boxes of ME 80's to 2012 and a few AME FREE picked up by sons best man in Victoria he'll drop them at sons when up there. They'll make there way to QLD some time in the year.

This on top of the 80 I picked up recently @50c each ME & MWE mainly. The lot prior that of mid 70's to early 90's these were not complete sets but there in lies the fun locating at decent price or better the missing ones.

The double up donated to the steam shed so they can build $$$ for more machines.

However, where it says "No part of this publication may be reproduced".... (Have I just broken the law there?), well, what constitutes a "part" - is it a word, a sentence, a paragraph?

Personally, I think the 70s was the golden era for Model Engineer, so many excellent contributors....
