Hi Folks

I have aquired a boring head with boring bars however thy have been well used and in need of sharpening, I have tried to sharpen on my bench grinder with poor results. Should I be using a different grinding wheel ?

If they are brazed carbide tips, then you'll need a green wheel. If carbide inserts, they are disposable and should be changed. If they're HSS, then you either need to get better at the correct shape (and I am NOT one to talk - I resorted to cheap carbide insert tools from China, I was that good at grinding my own) or hone and maybe polish after grinding.

Regards,

Richard.

Thanks Chaps

Yes they are brazed carbide tips so it looks like i will invest in a green wheel or convert to inserts.

A green wheel will not give a good enough finish for a really good surface, you will need to hone the cutting edges to get rid of the grinding marks.

A diamond wheel is ideal for touching up these carbide tips.
