Hey all, looking forward to seeing peoples projects and discovering new machining techniques. Currently I have a few old tools and machines but my real work hoarse is my Boxford AUD series 1 Lathe.

Welcome along James, what are your interests ? Motorcycles are my thing but all machining interests me.

Thanks guys. I am 36 years old, toolmaker by first trade and Goldsmith by second. I am currently self employed manufacturing windblown musical instruments or more precise fipple based flutes. I have always been interested in model engineering and my father has just started to learn it at his local model club so I am passing on a lot of my machining knowledge to him and letting him use my machines and tools.

At some point I will begin making models but feel I am not quite ready due to lack of some key machineary. I am very interested in machines and look forward to discovering new machine tools and the vast array of machining processes, especially milling work set ups on lathes. I am based in Plymouth UK.

Thanks Neil, well that would be a Low Whistle then. I make Low Whistles and Penny whistles one of the thing's I am looking to do here is to explore ways to cut the windways (slightly tapered). The pipe being Brass and 1.6mm thick. So really I am just cutting out a slot from the end of the tube, but the walls having a slight taper toward the end of the bore. There are many ideas on how to do this.

Interesting whistle site there - I must put a link on our club site. At school I made whistles from elder stems as the pith could be removed, and not far from you at Tavy as it happens. Have you joined the Plymouth club?

Hi James, interesting occupation, i make string instruments and bows for a living. Ive done a few with gold mounts but the cost is bloody high for gold so i mainly stick to silver most of the time.

Question: From that I assume you start at the bottom and increase the hole size until you hit 'in tune', then move up to the next one is that right?

Ah! we have a luthier here as well! great to hear from you Mark. Neil, yes thats basically it, you get the fundamental correct first (the overall length of the tube) and then drill your holes, then tune each one in. Make sure you check the previous hole tunings as you adjust the holes above!
