I have just started a subscription to Model Engineer with access to loads of back numbers, which has triggered an idea.

I'm looking for a really small IC engine, as small as you can get that is reliable and strong enough to pull a very small skin of a rice pudding.

What would folks recommend, preferably from ME?

Thanks in anticipation,

Matthew

.

What about one of the Mills based diesels. Certainly not the smallest but is a reliable and well proven design.

What is your skill level? For a quite powerful compact engine, have a look at Eric Whittle's V-8 barstock engine. Serialised in Model Engineer from April 1995. Later, he described a 4 cylinder in-line based, I think, on the DH Cirrus engine. About the same size as the V-8.

Nick's suggestion would be much easier to make.

Matthew,

The 'Nano' is the smallest published design I know of. It was in ME sometime in the 90's and the plan is still available.

This link is to the late Ron Chernich's attempt to make one. The rest of Ron's website is also well worth a read.

The Boll Aerodiesel is also a popular first IC, smallish but still a decent size for you to learn how to fit the piston to the cylinder.

Have a feeling that the Firefly is likely to be the smallest in the magazines that are in the archive which being a glow engine is easier to source fuel for.

For a simple motor, something like the Webster, a single cylinder, air cooled, open crank motor, no castings.
