1297 forum posts 50 photos | Hi all. I have a newly acquired Boxford 280, in the ivory and yellow livery, as per the first image here: http://www.lathes.co.uk/boxfordmodern/ I'm trying to find out the paint spec/colour so I can do some tidying up of the paintwork. Boxford can't tell me the paint code, apart from tell me it was a Trimite air drying acrylic. Trimite can't identify it, nor can Paragon. Anyone by chance happen to know what BS/RAL or whatever code the paint is? Thanks

Nick Nick Thanks Trimite have been very helpful, but didn't offer to check their sales records for a 1991 lathe paint! Boxford still make the 280 and derivatives, but changed to a two tone blue livery a number of years ago. |

505 forum posts 99 photos | Hi If you can't get a paint code car paint suppliers can match paints to a sample very closely, I got them to match and make up a synthetic enamel and they used a retarder in the mix so it could be brush painted, it lasted very well on a green Colchester ( this was before Paragon was available). You need one of the older fashioned paint suppliers that are used to matching faded car paints, I believe the minimum is 1 litre. I did try Halfords colour match spray recently when I made a power feed for my mill, the result was laughable, and there are no refunds, despite the green paint being blue! 81 forum posts 41 photos | Hi. I have had to match paints a couple of times and the more specialist paint suppliers now have a hand held device that can 'read' the colour and give you the shade and/or RAL number. It literally only takes a minute or two. The first occasion I needed this service, I used one of the larger (but local) glazing companies. They often need to colour match paint to paint the reverse side of windows or glass splash backs. So that is another route to what you want. I have no idea how these devices work, but I assume that you would have to get the painted sample as clean as you can before getting it scanned. Hope this is useful. Alan. |

At the moment looks like it's going to be Aldi silver as I have just stripped the old beige off the head and found blue/grey underneath. |

![]() 500 forum posts 31 photos | I found that Hammerite's Smoothrite was a reasonable enough match; the cream is quite close. The yellow isn't 100% but quite near enough. It's all a question of whether you just want to look at it, or actually use it to make things with... The amount of oil-staining on the chip tray on mine after a couple of years makes colour matching irrelevant. (Unless turning cast iron, I use a lot of lubricating oil on my lathes.) |

101 forum posts 9 photos | Thanks, it was going to be for painting the Centec, but that is now being done in Aldi Silver as I have two cans sitting on the shelf. I will bear in mind for re painting the Boxford cabinet when I have to. |
