I need some small dimensioned (17mmx 17mm) thin (1mm - 2mm) angle iron. I can get Stainless,Galvanised ,Wood and Plastic. Why can't I get mild steel ???

Not enough demand

How much do you need? I have milled it down from 3mm stuff in the past. The other option if you can live with a radius on the external edge is to take some thin wall 25x25 square box section tube and run a slitting saw down that.

Agree with Jason, if there is little commercial demand it won't be available. 20 x 20 x 3 is the smallest angle iron I could find. You can get 16 x 16 x 3 bright drawn from most suppliers but I find it is never at a right angle and needs skimming in the mill to true it up.

Cant you form your own from 1 mm flat steel strip and bend it?

Cant you use the galvanised offering?

I will probably use the galvanised. It is to be used to edge the running boards of a vintage motor cycle, so after forming, cutting and shaping to fit it will be painted and hopefully indistinguishable from the original. It would appear that in 1920 the size was a stock size. I was just curious why there is a demand for those dimensions in other materials but not in mild steel, which is a cheaper alternative. Protection for edges etc.

Try here you will probably find in that size you get pressed or folded angle rather than hot rolled or bright drawn.
