I have just acquired a Myford lathe, it is in working order although I dont know if it is aseven or super seven. Whats the difference?

Next I reckon I need to service it . It runs. the motor seems OK and it has a suds pump which works.

It needs a good clean, so to do this obviously I need to dismantle some parts, but before I make any moves in this direction I would welcome any advice from the forum. There is a good selection of tools, an inside and an outside chuck and a four jaw chuck,a couple of faceplates and other bits & pieces

It was a freebie, so I dont mind spending a bit of money on it to refurbish it.

All advice is welcome .

A free myford? Damn what a way to start out.

You might want to post a picture of it to get better advice.

Hi there, Bill,

Welcome to the forum.

The easy way to tell the difference is to look at the vee-belt that connects the counter-shaft to the lathe mandrel - if it's an ML7, the pulleys are triples, if it's a Super Seven they are quadruples.

Regarding dismantling, I'd recommend that you postpone that! Get it going and make some swarf first, you may discover you can leave well alone.

And have a browse on lathes.co.uk.

Best regards,

Swarf, Mostly!

Once you have identified it as an ML7 or a Super 7 buy a proper Myford handbook that covers virtually all you need to know. They are available from Myford or eBay. You can also find free PDF copies on the internet.

Hello again.. It has 4 pulleys so it is a super 7.

Not only that, looking at the cover for the pulleys, it says "SUPER 7" DOH!!!!! !I have used it to do a bit of practice turning on bits of scrap and it does seem to work fine. There is a box with lots of gears which I am told are for screwcutting , these obviously fix into the gearbox on the lewft hand side of the machine.

I need to buy a book.
