The village of Clun is organising a Festival of Angels for the Christmas period and all the local artists (we have many) and craftsmen have been asked to produce an Angel. Raiding the 'bits box' I have produced 'Swarfello' to represent the model engineering fraternity of the parish (just me)_l3a8758.jpg

Yes Roger, Clun is down the valley to the west of Craven Arms; we have lousy broadband speed and intermittent mobile phone signal but the Milky Way appears above the house on a clear night when its so quiet you can hear the grass grow and we are surrounded by Housman's Blue Remembered Hills'..

We also have an active artistic community that each year has a 3 day 'Arts and Crafts open studios' and this year my workshop was included, raising the question can engineering be art?
I showed my 31/2" William, stirling engines, the triple expansion engine and had my Waiting Train Clock system working. My first experience of 'arty' rather than 'techy' visitors and it was amazing for both of us. You can make the 2nd law of Thermodynamics sound quite mystical without misleading and the science behind pendulums was quite a hit!
I had one unbeliever who said "Have you even done anything remotely artistic?
I held up a miniature steam valve assembly (of which I am quite proud) and said that I had recently visited the Tate Modern and, in my opinion, there had been as much true art and a damn sight more craftsmanship in that building when it was a power station rather than now it was an exhibition space - the lady in question huffed off!
