Whilst at the show this weekend I thought I would get myself a new keyless chuck, I ended up buying one from the myford stand,

Not expecting much from it for £25 but quite surprised it seems very well made,

has anyone else tried one?

.

If it's Myford presumably it's the same ones sold by RDG.

I have 2 of them in different sizes for a good while and cannot fault them. Especially for the money.!

But is it my imagination or do all the taper sleeves claim to be heat treated but in reality they are still soft?

"heat treated"

I have been on totally keyless for about 10 years now.

Started when I bought the TOS lathe new which must be 15 years ago now and gradually changed over.

I think the only keyed chuck is a monster 3/4" for odd jobs. Ironically the three that I ordered with the lathe, all genuine Jacobs have exploded and been replaced by imports which have held up better. IMHO the Jacobs had been heat treated too far and when they self tightened as keyless do, they just broke up.

Each lathe has 4, mills have 3 or 4 each, few on the drill so probably running about 17 or 18 pieces, all with no problems.

I have a Britool strap wrench that has a plastic body and fabric strap which is perfect for the odd time that they lock so tight you can't undo them.

Also agree with David.

I have a couple of the metal and leather ones as sold by ARC, they work ace and because it's only the leather that contacts the chuck there are no marks left.

The problem I had with the Jacobs ones wasn't a question of undoing them, it was a question of when they tightened up the rollers inside crumbled and then further self tightening just ground all the debris into the rest of the chuck and mangled it. All 3 did exactly the same thing but none of the various pattern replacement chucks have done this.
