Thread Title: LNWR Webb Compound Jeanie Deans 2-2-2-0 ME4491
Description: Wanted - More Information on the 5" Gauge Model at IMLEC 2014

I was delighted to see the entry of James Tilbury's 5" Gauge Jeanie Deans in the IMLEC 2014 Report - Run No. 21.

I remember a very long time ago reading an article in Model Engineer by LBSC about the LNWR Webb Compound Jeanie Deans 2-2-2-0 and since then have always wanted to build one but never saw any construction articles, drawings, castings etc.

Then suddenly here is a 5" Gauge Model actually running.

Can anyone please provide more information - where the drawings and castings etc came from etc?

Hello. I know the builder personally and will try to put the two of you in contact.

The original seems to have been a one-off and LBSC withheld certain design aspects of his post WW2 original JD loco which were described in 1967.

from 3312 1967. Confirms that drawings are available

“Jeanie Deans” intercepting valve lever
It has been pointed out that no lever for operating
the intercepting valve is shown on the Jeanie Deans
drawings. In case any beginner is doubtful, all that is
needed is a simple plain lever turned and ¿led to
shape from a bit of f'+ in. >< 3; in. mild steel.

Jennie Deans Set Plan LO63

They spell it differently from the original. Is that an error Neil?

Hello Ady1,

The original LBSC built Jeanie Deans went after his death to Reggie Hanks where it was stolen, sadly I do not think it was ever recovered.

The 5" gauge locomotive that ran recently in IMLEC was built by I think Dave Roberts.

To ME in Thailand, I do not think drawings are available for a 5" gauge version, although I do have a fairly comprehensive set of works drawings at 1.5" - 1ft which would be a good starting point.

Regards,

Bob Youldon

I don't know what else you'd call it.

There are 8 sheets, cleanly scanned and beautifully drawn in LBSC's own hand. Note they are for 3 1/2" gauge.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I am absolutely amazed and delighted by the responses and the level of detail.

It's going to take me some time to work my way through them all but again many thank yous.

From a quick scan it looks like the pages posted by Ady1 are the articles I read all those years ago.

Once again thank you all and when I have read everything I may be able to respond to individual posts.

Best Regards

MEinThailand,

The book, "LBSC his life and locomotives" by Brian Hollingsworth/Croesor Junction Press,1982.

SBN 0 86093 180 3. You may be able to borrow this from a library or buy it second hand.

Backhead and LH side photos, page 71. Pages @ the back list all his locos and where to obtain drawings and castings but the sourcing info gradually becomes outdated with time as business owners retire and sell their empires on. However, in JD, A J Reeves listed as doing castings and drawings in 3 1/2"G only. The 5"G version mentioned above would have required the builder to scale up the original drawings and procure suitable castings. Another very useful book, long out of print simply detailed details of wheels, pony/driving/trailing/tender for dozens of British loco. designs. I think the Author`s name was Sharman. You should be able to find out spoke nos. from photos.

At least it's available now, many of these plans were lost on the MAP X-list for decades.
