Given that Robert was calling-in the experts from work : I would have hoped that they could detect angles of about 20 seconds using a clinometer ... or considerably better than that with an autocollimator.

'though the small size of the mill might preclude convenient use of an autocollimator.

The Hilger Watts TA1 instructions include quite a good discussion:

... Vintage stuff.

How on earth do you find this stuff? Even with the link it took me a while to suss out the Russian website and find the pdf.

If anyone else is interested in auto-collimators, this is a sample:

This is the sort of instrument I dream of finding at a boot sale for a few quid.

Variations of these are used to check camera lens element alignments with similar accuracy.

I have been interested for decades, and I have a couple of Taylor Hobson's equivalent model; hoping to build one decent one from the pair [sometime]. ... So I have some motivation.

A quick google will show Tormachs and Bridgeports being shimmed to correct similar errors so neither the issue nor the cure is unique to far-eastern imports.

Really? Not familiar with Tormach machine tools but Bridgeports I am, I'm assuming the turret type, M and J type heads. These will not be shimmed to correct errors that have been described in this thread and the other now closed thread. The heads tilt and nod so the errors can be eliminated.

I wonder if, in this case, that shimming the gib strips has caused confusion. A well known trick to extend the life of a Bridgeport before commiting to the expense of re-chromed and ground slide ways.

Hi Neil

Check the the shimming and leveling a Tormach video at about 12 minutes, with one end of the bubble out of sight there is no way of knowing if the bubble is touching the end of the glass vial, if it does the movement will be greatly reduced. any indicated error or lack of error may be way off. You must be able to see both ends of the bubble.

Regards
John

Talking of shimming, I came across this video on Youtube where an epoxy product supplied by a German company is used as an alternative. This is new to me (not that that means much!) has anyone else used this technique?
