Also, the fact that you stated earlier that you could afford to pay £10 per litre (£45.50 per gallon) for petrol/diesel tells me you are detached from the realities of many other peoples lives

Martin.

Naughty Martin! What I actually said was:

As I'm low mileage and mildly well-off, I could pay up to about £10 per litre before having to think, though that's assuming other prices stay still, which they aren't. My son and daughter would not be able to sustain anything like that: they both live on a budget, and are both delighted the price of fuel didn't go past £2/litre and is dropping back.

You're welcome to your opinion I'm detached from other people's lives, but don't forget opinion without evidence is low value.

I wonder how long folk believe oil will last before it becomes expensive due to demand exceeding supply as the oil fields empty? The present disruption, which is not due to resource depletion, is just a hint of the trouble to come. My understanding is humanity has about 30 years to get off oil and gas before prices skyrocket. This isn't long in the scale of major infrastructure projects like Nuclear power.

Time to stop dithering and get on with it. Ignoring the evidence is high-risk because it leaves our children and grandchildren to cope with energy shortages and the consequences of climate change. Worldwide.

Dave

The dithering has been going on for fifty years or more, Dave, hasn't it?

Two of the books I read as an undergraduate are "Man and Environment", by Robert Arvill, Penguin 1969, and "The Limits to Growth" (full text), published in 1972.

Much of what we're faced with today environmentally-speaking might have been either prevented or mitigated if the message of those books had been acted on.

So, what are you doing to bring any of this wisdom about - apart from armchair-pontificating at great length blaming everyone else on here?
Whose door are you banging down to bring it about?
Who are you eye-balling to make any constructive progress at all.
If anyone can answer this positively I will try to support you, but I doubt I will have the chance.

Apparently Russia are burning off the gas that they can't sell:

I wonder if anyone is traveling with superglue to stop it.
Without a world wide agreement anything we do will have no effect.

I fear that it may be more of, "I'll burn it off so you can't have it, and will suffer in your way, just as we do because of your sanctions."

Politics is a very dirty world, IMO

If we can just ride out the 30 years until fusion power arrives everything will be ok.

Or wait for artificial photosynthesis to produce carbon fuels from carbon dioxide and water.

Anyone remember 1975 when we were told that the world had only 5 years oil left?

Most everything good is always 30 years away. Flying cars, unlimited energy, supreme gas mileage etc.

My teachers were all good. The chap who taught us Economics had served a prison sentence for smuggling western currency into Czechoslovakia and smuggling out Black Market goodies. Serious offences in a Communist country. Lucky to be released early by Dubcek as a goodwill gesture just before the Russians invaded, otherwise he'd have done the full 7 years ...

Some of the nuns at my school deserved imprisonment, but were protected by their peceived goodness. angel I'm not aware of any ex-cons being on the teaching staff there though. smiley

I take it oil wasn't on the curriculum at your school?

Martin.
