Subscription in the UK by direct debit - is it only available as a one off payment per year or is a quarterly (or even monthly?) DD subscription available?
Regards, Chris |

Not bad for a magazine with a cover price of $2.95, and I'll bet that the importers don't even pay that.
Oh yeah and there's sales tax too. BC was about 7% at one time with no federal tax on books, but the new and improved "Harmonized Sales Tax" probably works out at 20%. Alberta didn't have any tax on written stuff at one time, but I don't know about now. Canadians get ripped off on anything imported. Even with the US dollar at about even, there's a few bucks difference in the sticker price, especially on books.
Sure glad that I don't live there anymore.

![]() 3357 forum posts 112 photos 10 articles | Hi John
There is a reason why the number is going by post.
The email is being changed to suit the new digital subscription.
We will be offering two subscriptions in the future to each magazine.
There will be a combined digital and print subscription and a digital only subscription.
Both subscriptions will give access to all of the current and archive issues for the particular magazine subscribed to.
It will take a little while to set up the new subscription pages.
This is being done for the benefit of US and Canadian subscribers who will be able to access the magazines at the same price as the UK subscribers.
regards David

Hi Robert
MEW 172 subscription page says offer ends 31 December.
Website says 21 January.
I will query it but doubt it will be worth the effort.
They will just say the website is wrong.
The next offer will be found at the following web address and will probably be active in about a week's time. The price will be £42 by direct debit or £44.50 for a one of payment by card or cheque and will include a copy of Workshop Practice book 46 Workshop Machinery by Alex Wiese.
Regards David
The next offer code is
www.subscription.co.uk/mew/V083 Hi David, I think you're missing my point: ExpressMags does not support the subscription renewals you're offering.

David, that's interesting.
I could never get a live person at ExpressMags to answer the phone or reply to email, but someone at ExpressMags called my house the day I posted this thread (December 14, during the previous subscription discount),. They would not support the subscription discount that was offered on MyHobbyStore's web page at the time.
So I subscribed at the normal $89 USD rate -- the Express Mags rep indicated they DO NOT support the MyHobbyStore discounted subscription rates..
My subscription actually doesn't expire until March, so ExpressMags calling me in December was a bit premature, so if you can give me the correct subscription rate, it would be greatly appreciated David!

ExpressMags doesn't send out discount offers. So the ExpressMags rep told me no discounts in North America. |

12 forum posts | Hello Sid and other Canadians,
I believe most every thing related to media be it books, magazines, music that doesn't originate in Canada will cost a certain percentage more than the comparable media item will cost in the US. This is because Canada places an excise tax on these items and uses the revenue to protect and support Canadian artists/authors/etc. This excise tax is applied to the items as they cross the border into Canada. In addition, Canada and perhaps the Provinces also apply the VAT to the item based upon the Canadian sale price of the item

829 forum posts 1 photos | Hello John, Your belief is erroneous. There is no "excise" tax on printed materials to protect Canadian artists and authors. You're confusing it with the tax on recordable materials (of which Canadian artists have seen a minimal amount anyway). There is no "VAT" in Canada. there is GST at the Federal level, PST at the Provincial level or the combined (and universally reviled) HST in some provinces. All of these are added after the purchase price and nothing to do with the argument here. Raising them is just adding the same old, same old red-herring that we keep having to do battle against. |

You can't subscribe to Model Engineer in North America without going through ExpressMags!
If you try to use the links on MyHobbyStore, it re-routes you ExpressMags.

So John tells me that the latest Model Engineering Workshop has an editorial from David Clark complaining about whinging North American subscribers.
Oooh, I can't wait to read it!
So in summary:
1. North American subscribers must go through ExpressMags, who tacks a £10 distributor fee onto the subscription.
2. North American subscribers can't get the discount subscriptions that MyHobbyStore offers.
3. North American subscribers don't get the Workshop Practice books that the rest of the ME and MEW subscribers get for renewal.
