Thread: My subscription is running out
14/01/2011 06:00:27
Hello Sid and other Canadians,

I believe most every thing related to media be it books, magazines, music that doesn't originate in Canada will cost a certain percentage more than the comparable media item will cost in the US.  This is because Canada places an excise tax on these items and uses the revenue to protect and support Canadian artists/authors/etc.  This excise tax is applied to the items as they cross the border into Canada.  In addition, Canada and perhaps the Provinces also apply the VAT to the item based upon the Canadian sale price of the item

Thread: glow plugs & fuel
17/05/2010 23:01:02
Steve,

I am located in the USA and am assuming you are located in GB.  I would suggest starting with a fuel made for 4 strokes with 5% nitro due to the high compression ratio you are proposing.  I don't think you want to draw fuel through the crankcase as you are making a 4 stroke engine, not a 2 stroke engine.  Single cylinder 2 stroke engines can draw fuel air through the crankcase as the fuel air mixture is inducted into the crankcase via an inlet port in the crankshaft, a rear rotor valve or a piston port.  All of these methods provide a method of sealing the crankcase during the power stroke so the fuel air mixture is compressed in the crankcase prior to opening of the inlet ports near the bottom of the power stroke.  A multi cylinder 2 stroke engine complicates the induction method and requires an internal crankcase seal between cylinders and a separate induction system for each cylinder or a means of providing external pressurized fuel air mixture to the engine which really complicates things.

(Added later)

As far as glowplugs, any good 4 stroke glow plug should be adequate.  4 stroke glowplugs have a heavier glow element so it retains heat better.  In the US, Fox makes a popular 4 stroke glow plug.  OS also makes glow plugs.  I would suggest starting with a middle heat range plug.  You will know if the plug is too hot as the element will burn out  and a cold plug will foul with oil and carbon.  I would recommend provision of an "onboard" power supply set up so power is supplied to the plugs during engine idling so as to keep the plugs hot and prevent fouling.

(end addition)
You are proposing a 4 stroke radial engine.  I am having trouble visualizing a method of feeding the fuel air mixture through the crankcase due to the radial arrangement of the cylinders without an exterior pump (positive displacement air pump supercharger)as you will not be able to use the pistons as an air pump.  It seems a much simpler method of fuel air induction would be to route the fuel air mixture directly to the intake valve for each cylinder through use of either an intake manifold with one carbeurator  or a carbeurator for each cylinder as is currently done with modern 4 stroke model aircraft engines.   The latter method would certainly simplify setting fuel air mixtures.

As far as lubrication of the crankcase and rod end bearings, commercially produced 4 stroke model aircraft engines get their lubrication from blowby past the ring(s).   Without knowledge of your proposed bearings I would suggest a 4 stroke model aircraft fuel  with some castor oil for its added lubrication qualities.  As an alternative, a wet or dry sump might be utilized and a lubricating oil compatible with the 4 stroke fuel constituents (lube oil and methanol).

Your project really sounds interesting and I would request that you post some pictures of progress and project updates.  I am myself working on my machining skills so as to be able to make some single cylinder engines for play purposes and possible incorporation into flying models.  I have been flying RC aircraft since the early 1980's.

Hope the above provides some useful information.

John

a couple of other free cad programs include AlleyCAD Home and ProgeCAD.
Both have the feel of AutoCAD.  KOMPAS 3D Lite is also available, I haven't installed it yet as it is a recent download.

Thread: N.A. Subscriptions in Disarray
25/01/2010 22:24:28
David and Heather,

As of today, January 25th, I am still in arrears magazine numbers as follows:

Model Engineer all numbers beyond issue 4363 and Model Engineer Workshop all numbers beyond issue 157.

Please forward to me Heather's email or postal address so I may process a formal request for  delivery of back numbers to my subscriptions.

I must concur with Mr. Blackson's comments regarding Express Mags apparently misleading David as my mailing address is also a USA address.

I also recently subscribed to RCM&E and have received 2 issues of that magazine which have been delivered from Express Mag's USA branch.

I can understand some of the delivery issues relating to issues involved with the transition from EWA to Express Mags but there should have been NO issues relating to delivery of magazines in a timely manner published after the effective date of the transition from EWA to Express Mags.

Please any help with delivery of back issues and delivery of subsequent issues of your magazines will be sincerely appreciated.
Thread: New MEW Digital archive - access?
18/12/2009 01:15:38
Hello all,

I also joined the party.  I am from across the big pond and am still waiting for the last several paper issues of ME and MEW.   Fortunately I can view and print them on line but I much prefer the paper copies for reading.

I just got my confirmation email and my subscriber number is different than my ME and MWE number.  I also entered it into the appropriate place in my details and do not have access.

I am waiting impatiently for the digital archive for ME to be ready.  I have been acquiring some of the old numbers via e-bay but it is hit or miss as far as complete years.

Thread: Ok, where did the back issues of MEW go?

David

Thanks for the update.  I have been waiting patiently for my back issues to get to my mailbox realizing that there would be some disruption in service due to the issues with the transition from EWA to Express Mags.

Thread: Geometer
22/10/2009 17:50:01
David,

Per Ron Chernich's web site (Model Engine News), Geometer wasa nom de plume for Ian Bradley.  I extracted this information from the August 2006 issue.  Per Ron, Mr. Bradley also contributed 106 articles under his name and another 212 articles with Dr. N. F. Hallows as Duplex.

I can't vouch for the correctness of the above information, hope it helps you out.

I also want to take a moment to offer my most sincere thanks for the wonderful forum and information, especially in the members only areas.  What a tremendous resource.

Thank you once again.

Thread: Elmer's Engines groups on Yahoo
13/09/2009 22:43:09
To All,

There are 4 or 5 groups on Yahoo that address the plans and articles for construction of Elmer Verberg (sp?) engines.

Dirk Tollenaar is both the group owner and copy right owner to the Elmer's Book that contains the articles and plans.

Copy right ownership is addressed in message 261 in which Mr. Tollenaar states that he is the copy right holder.

Accessing the groups requires on create a user account on Yahoo.

Thread: Boiler Designs
06/09/2009 10:47:52
Martin P,

You might check the Home Model Engine Machinist forum, I have downloaded at least 1 boiler design, just have not built it.

Some of the other Model Engineering forums probably will also have some informatin.

Hope this helps you.

Thread: login/logout issues
06/09/2009 10:37:30
Thanks to Circlip and LADmachining for responding to my original posting.  It is a comfort :< to know others are having similar issues as me.

( the emoticon above was NOT added by me but by the site.)

As an update to the login/log out problem with the digital issues, I have found that after I read one of the digital issues and try to go to the next issue of interest that I often get an error message saying I am not loged in and can't view the digital issues.  When that happens, I have been able to go to the home page and view one of the subscribers only articles.  After I open the subscribers only article, I am able to gain access to the digital issues.  This is done without logging out and logging back in.

When I am told I am not authorized to view the digital issue, I can also access my profile, account information, etc.  This indicates I am still logged into the system.

I have tried the logout button in the upper right corner and haven't been able to get the system to log me out.  I have also tried closing internet explorer without logging out.  When I re open IE to the Model Engineer site, I am still logged in.

These are some of the work arounds I have tried regarding this issue.

IE 7, Win XP Pro SP3, P4 desktop computer with not enough ram.

Hope the above information is of interest.

Regards, John

When I leave my computer for a period of time, apparently my login expires as I can not get into the members only areas.  Under my account, my user name appears as though I am logged in.

There appears to be no easy way to relog in to the site to gain access to the members only areas which makes logging in problematical at best.  This issue is very irritating to say the least.

Please allow the following:

Allow a user to remain logged in for a longer period of time of inactivity
If logged out, don't show the user name in the my account box
Change the login status in the upper right green bar to indicate the user is logged out
Provide an easy and clearly identified mechanism to allow a user to login to the site.

Added a bit later:

I do not want to sound critical of the site, I think it is a wonderful and valuable addition to my subscriptions to ME and MEW.  I do not think any other magazine site offers as much content and value as this one.

Any help/feedback on the above issues will be sincerely appreciated.

Respectfully,

John

Thread: Subscribers only
25/08/2009 06:48:04
David,

I am also a USA subscriber with issues regarding my subscriber number.  I receive both ME and MEW through EWA and would like to get access to the subscribers area.

Any help would be truly appreciated.
