So in summary:
1. North American subscribers must go through ExpressMags, who tacks a £10 distributor fee onto the subscription.
2. North American subscribers can't get the discount subscriptions that MyHobbyStore offers.
3. North American subscribers don't get the Workshop Practice books that the rest of the ME and MEW subscribers get for renewal.
Posted by David Clark 1 on 16/01/2011 15:23:03: 1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes and No.
We'll, at least we clarified that part.
The horse is dead -- please lock the thread David.
Thanks,

We ran North American and Canadian offers offering the Mini Lathe book last year. They ran for several issues. They were a separate half page advert in the body of the magazine.
regards David Right, but the instructions to get the book indicate that you should renew online at: www.subscription.co.uk/myhobbystore/X0nn When North American subscribers clicked that link, they ended up back at ExpressMags with no Mini-Lathe book offered.
Robert M.: my irritation is that all ME/MEW subscriptions outside of the UK, except North America, are handled by MyHobbyStore directly. So the Australian subscribers, for example, don't pay ExpressMag's distributor fees, they have access to the discounted subscription rates, and presumably get the Workshop Practice books for renewing their subscription Edited By Robert George on 16/01/2011 17:01:44 |

Newsagents copies of MEW 173 in US and I assume Canada will have subscription leaflets in them offering a Workshop Practice book.
Last year's MEW indicated a copy of the Mini-Lathe workshop practice book, and (North American subscribers) didn't get that either. I'd *love* to receive a
copy

So John tells me that the latest Model Engineering Workshop has an editorial from David Clark complaining about whinging North American subscribers.
Oooh, I can't wait to read it!

There is one simple answer to this problem, stop using Express mags. There are lost of company's out there who will post mags to any where in the world one is called the Post Office. all you have to do is ring then and they will come collect all the mags and away you go.
You can't subscribe to Model Engineer in North America without going through ExpressMags!
If you try to use the links on MyHobbyStore, it re-routes you ExpressMags.

Hi Robert
Are you saying that Express magazines will not accept the discount offered on a renewal letter?
regards david
ExpressMags doesn't send out discount offers. So the ExpressMags rep told me no discounts in North America. |
12/01/2011 21:19:58 |
David, that's interesting.
I could never get a live person at ExpressMags to answer the phone or reply to email, but someone at ExpressMags called my house the day I posted this thread (December 14, during the previous subscription discount),. They would not support the subscription discount that was offered on MyHobbyStore's web page at the time.
So I subscribed at the normal $89 USD rate -- the Express Mags rep indicated they DO NOT support the MyHobbyStore discounted subscription rates..
My subscription actually doesn't expire until March, so ExpressMags calling me in December was a bit premature, so if you can give me the correct subscription rate, it would be greatly appreciated David!

Hi Robert
MEW 172 subscription page says offer ends 31 December.
Website says 21 January.
I will query it but doubt it will be worth the effort.
They will just say the website is wrong.
The next offer will be found at the following web address and will probably be active in about a week's time. The price will be £42 by direct debit or £44.50 for a one of payment by card or cheque and will include a copy of Workshop Practice book 46 Workshop Machinery by Alex Wiese.
Regards David
The next offer code is
www.subscription.co.uk/mew/V083 Hi David, I think you're missing my point: ExpressMags does not support the subscription renewals you're offering.

So, it's been a year, and I'm looking at the pricing (again) for North American Subscribers. The UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand are paying £42.00, which is $66 USD. ExpressMags is charging $89 USD, and $109 Canadian. So for some reason, the US and Canada pay 30% more than the rest of the world for Model Engineer's Workshop. I was wondering why David was posting a different UK price for the MEW subscription than I was. At the time I made this thread (December 15), the UK subscription was £42.00.
I just clicked-through the MyHobbyStore subscription link, and up comes the message:
"Sorry, this offer has now closed.
Please click here to subscribe at the standard rate." After about 20 sections, the page auto-refreshes, and the new price is now £51.35
So now there's only a $10 difference in price.
I guess that's one way to equalize the North American price disparity! LOL ![]() Edited By Robert George on 09/01/2011 03:13:36 |

Reluctantly, I did renew my subscription to MEW in spite of the $10 pre-tax difference . The reason given by Express Mags for the price difference between the US and Canadian subscribers was that mailing costs were higher in Canada due to the smaller volumes.
Did the mailing costs suddenly increase 30% (the price difference between North American subscription and the rest of the world) since the Model Engineer contract switched from Wise Owl to Express Mags?
I think it's pretty clear that ExpressMags negotiated some kind of deal, and sadly MyHobbyStore is not getting the extra 30% subscription fee, ExpressMags is. Edited By Robert George on 07/01/2011 14:19:00 |

Hi There
You won't get the UK price, rest of world excluding US and Canada is £52.95.
regards David
According to your web page, the UK price is £42:
ExpressMags is charging £56.95, so where is the £14.95 going?
John: how about I pay you for a MEW subscription, and you drop-ship me the issues? I'd rather you spend the extra £15 at the pub than ExpressMags pocket it.

Robert

Hi There
The subscription price for Model Engineer was reduced
However, 109 Canadian dollars is 68.72 pounds against 52.95 GB pounds.
I will see what is going on.

Hi David, I would greatly appreciate that!
ExpressMags is charging $89 USD, which is 57 GB pounds.
According to the web page, the UK subscription is 42 GB pounds?
Thanks!

Owen, if David deletes my post, he'll have answered my question.
I really like MEW as well -- it's excellent! But somehow ExpressMags has managed to apply a levy to the North American subscriptions. We've heard all the excuses: shipping and distribution to the US and Canada is higher than shipping and distribution to Australia and New Zealand. ???
I really miss Wise Owl Publications -- they were good people

Thanks Sid -- yes, that is the link I'm using, and it now *only* shows the digital archives, and not the current issues. David, could you clarify the Free Book situation for the North American subscribers? I thought you said something about a 7x10 Mini-lathe book, but I haven't seen mention of it in MEW? Are we supposed to call the distributor? Thanks, Robert |
Thread: MEW Digital Archives |
01/06/2010 15:49:08 |
Thanks Sid, but the problem I'm having is that when I click on "Extra" and go to the Digital Archives, I get issues 1 - 145, but the recent issues are nowhere to be found. They used to have two links there; the recent issues, and the Digital Archives. I'm an active MEW subscriber, and I've obviously paid for the digital archives of the old issues, which I can get to... To add to the confusion, issue 163 shows up on the Digital Archives, so I'm actually seeing issues 1 - 145, and 163. Anyone else having this issue? Edited By Robert George on 01/06/2010 15:50:32 |
01/06/2010 14:39:33 |
I've been exchanging email with John Stevenson, and he says that he still sees issues 146 - 163, but they've gone missing on my Digital Archives. Have the recent back issues (not the paid Digital Archives, to which I'm subscribed and can read) been moved to a different link? Edited By Robert George on 01/06/2010 14:41:16 |
