Any one know where a filing machine like in the video can be sourced?

I'm fairly certain that ages ago there was an article in MEW about adapting an electric jigsaw as a filer. You could also do something similar with a nibbler I imagine. And Harold Hall described his own design.

And quick Google gives lots of results too.

Hi MichaelG, thanks for the fascinating In Breguets Footsteps link, although I'm unlikely to take up clock making, but I do admire many of the clocks and the work involved that I've seen at shows, it's much to fiddly for me, I'm more of a heavier metal worker and I have enough projects on the go anyway.

Regards Nick.

Four months work !
stunning result yet at first glance the original looked quite simple/minimalist, difficult to express.

The original intention of fret/piercing saw work was good too.

Chris, I've been watching this thread with interest. I too have a Sherline lathe and mill and we have similar interests.

But please, do appreciate that people on this forum have taken their valuable time to give you good advice based on years of experience.

I have not seen anyone call you or your ideas "silly". Only polite encouragement and opinions. If those opinions differ from yours, don't take it as a criticism or an insult.

I hope you continue to post as I've learnt a fair bit from some of the replies - as I said, we have similar equipment and interests.

Please try to be less sensitive and take on board the massive reserve of knowledge this forum represents.

Like yourself, I've not been in this game for too long but I've learnt a huge amount from delving into this forum.

Back to the original subject. George Daniels "Watchmaking" has very informative descriptions and diagrams for crossing out wheels. He shows which files to use and in which order to get crisp corners etc.

Anyway, best of luck with whatever method you choose and keep us informed.

Cheers

Steve

Jason, thank you, I did refer to moderation rather than Moderation but it has served the same purpose. Robert Butler

Hmmm.

I find it sad and depressing that when I asked people to show some restraint, the immediate responses were two lengthy posts carrying on the palaver.

Hopefully we can be bigger than just keeping things going in the forlorn hope that one party decides the other may have a point.

I am reviving this thread, to post a  **LINK**

https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Levin-Watchmakers-Lathe-Filing-Machine-Clock-Tool-Attachment-Filer-Die-/172822040549

The item is already sold, but it is worth a look if you are interested in building a ‘machine filling‘ attachment for a small lathe.

The design is by Levin; but, given that his book is rather pricey, it’s perhaps worth studying the ebay photos whilst they are still accessible.

Update on Scroll saw adaption to cut brass.

Now finished and tested it so far seems fine.

What I learned was (some of it is basic but worth repeating):

1.Adapt if necessary to hold a jewelers blade

2.Get the right blade,

3.Put it in the right direction.

4 Reduce your centre table holes

5. Learn to get the right tension on the blade

6. Cutting Speed surpisingly was not as crucial as I initially thought but not too fast 500 to 750, maybe more fine

7. Work slowly. (I found the advantage of using the scroll saw was control)

8. Hold the work firmly (still thinking of ways to better hold wheel.

9. Ensure Scroll saw is not vibrating so as to cause an issue.

10. It is not essential to buy the most expensive scroll saw

Chris
