Grabbed a SanDisk 80Mb/s one for £12 in Tesco because the next speed upgrade was appearing on the shelves!

I have many times tried to gain the interest of the younger folk in not just engineering but anything u can fix with ur hands (not useing a KEYBOARD) and so far no takers.........

hopefully quite soon, I'll be moving to an underprivelaged place where I will do my upmost to get a young somebody interested in the above subjects including woodwork......dirty word I know.......

so when I'm finished with it all, they can have the whole shebang of tools, machines and stock........in my heart I'd like to help somebody with not much hope to get on in this v/diff world......at least a good start......

I'm sure it's more diff now than when I started 50 years ago........!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is "The Future" is drones, AI, blockchains, Robots, high technology the net and computers

It's all going digital and connected 24/7

The gulf between rich and poor is going to grow even bigger as these new technologies kick in and go global

A trade like a decent joiner will pay bills but will it buy you a house as well??

Glad I'm old, and I hope there's no reincarnation

(We'd have to do it all over again?!? No thank-you!)

Hopper,

Can’t comment on first statement, but overhead valves (and even overhead cams) predate your side valve motorcycle engine by about thirty years ( 20, at least). smiley

Overhead valves are a passing fad I tell ya.

Forgetting all the social network stuff, internet or even it's use as a phone here are some of the things that a smart phone could do for you.

1. Torch

2. Camera (usefull for taking close up's of stuff you can't see very well in awkward places, like behind your lathe)

3. Magnifying glass. That a photo and zoom the image. Handy for reading the data plate on the underside of motors etc.

4. Portable memory. Picture of the model and serial number on your washing machine.

5. Tape recorder.

6. Spirit level.

7. Vibration meter.

. . . . . . . etc etc

If I go on any longer I'm going to have to go and buy one.

regards Martin

1). My old nokia even had a light.

2). I can use my ipad, my wife’s phone or the camera.

3). My wife has a microscope thingy , even. Uses it for investigating lace.

4). Sorry, but I don’t carry my washing machine around. I know exactly where it is!

5). Not sure how or why, but I have a perfectly good reel to reel if i really need to...

6). Got a few of those!

7). Does it tell you when the batteries are dead?smiley

If you went on, I would still use my wife’s, if really necessary.

I spend the £350 (or more!) some spend, each year, on their phones, on more important things - like my Ipad Pro 12.9. wink 2

Shazam is useful if you get annoyed by songs you hear but can't remember, 10s of listening and Shazam will put you out of your misery.
