They were excellent little clamps, made by Turton Engineering - now long vanished, sad to say (the current company of that name is not directly related to the Crab Clamp-making one).

I have 3 of them still (would the person that nicked the 4th one please give it back!) and use them almost daily. Mine are in red, by the way, but with the plastic sticker saying thay are: "CRAB CLAMPS - Made in England".

I will try to post a photo of one of them once I have "settled in" here.

Here is a photo of one of my own Crab Clams:

The preview shows the photo as rather distorted, but the background should help work out the true aspect ratio of the photo... I hope.

Google for Crab Clamps Popular Science and open the link to the November 1985 issue which should come up with a good in use picture at the top of the page. Can't insert the link 'cos its a monster being via Google books.

The original brand name of these clamps is KANT TWIST and I think they originate from the US,

Interesting to find a US manufacturer still making them. Aside from the name they give their product ("Deep Throat Jaw", indeed!) I will contact them to find if they have any European distributors for their products, or how much they would charge for a small quantity of them shipped to Europe.

If I get a reply, I will put the gist of the message up here.

Does anyone remember an article in one of the model magazines about making clamps to this design.

It's virtually identical to Stan Brays finger clamp design, although that is made to attach to a surface and press down.

This guy makes it look like a doddle to make your own. I guess it would be fairly straightforward to scale it up or down to the size you want.

AKA Can't twist clamps there are a few on Ebay from the U.S .

There isn't much in making making them yourself mostly basic metal work with a bit of turning and threading thrown in - a good beginners project maybe?

That's why I posted asking if anyone can remember what magazine an article has been in. Several members at our club want to make some and although I have 1 clamp to copy I remember an article in one of the magazines but cant remember if it was in ME / MEW / EIM or one of the US magazines Home Shop Machinist or Machinest Workshop.
