Whew - the real answer caught me just in time from attacking an old item with Pale Ale, which was the only answer yielded by 'Oogling -

Michael dow- nunda

where Iso-propyl is usually written out in full rather than acronymised - or is it acronymated?

They're both alcohol, it's just that the isopropyl one is a bit stronger...

Last time I saw India Pale Ale, it was sold in small Brown Bottles. Didn't realise it's still available but it seems young folk like it:

There's a version suitable for Model Engineers:

Tasty IPA Beers shouldn't be confused with Iso-Propyl Alcohol which is an industrial solvent made from Acetone.

Iso-Propyl Alcohol has an unpleasant burning bitter-sweet taste and none of the desirable effects of booze. Instead, produces headaches, depression, dizziness, vomiting, narcosis, coma, and death. Lethal dose, about 100ml. Good xmas present for my mother-in-law, who might drink it because she's a dragon...

wink

Hi all, removing gunge, model aircraft engines with baked on castrol R was removed back in the day with biological washing powder like magic, larger aluminium motorcycle castings came up like new when heated up in a bucket of water with some rhubarb leaves (Oxalic Acid) the red part left over may be made into a pastry covered pie colloquially known as Hydrochloric Acid Pie for good reason. ( if cookery of any kind is not within your grasp ask your mother or wife for assistance ) Motorcycle Exhaust Pipes & Silencers also respond well, after plugging one end & standing upright, to the boiling washing powder solution, you would not believe the sheer amount of gunge that pours out!

I use petrol when cleaning stationary engine (i/c) parts ,some of them had close on a 100 years of muck on them. when I was an instrument maker back in the 1960s all the instrument and measuring scales prior to laquering were cleaned with petrol,in those days we used a brush similar to a tooth brush made by the Clean ezee company ,they were good and lasted ages and not affected by petrol, ordinary toothbrushes soon go soggy if left in petrol.

I've nearly finished the rebuild, but I've hit a snag... For some reason the governor drive belt has, over its 20 years spent in a box, grown nearly an inch longer - much too long for use. I can't remember where I got it, and I'm not sure what it's made of - it's a black stretchy round material, about 0.050" in diameter. Does anyone know where I'd get a replacement, or some alternative material I could use ?

Bob

I bought some drive belts to repair an old tape recorder from CPC.

They stock a large range. You might find something suitable from them.

Thanks for the link, but they don't have anything big enough in the profile I need (1.2mm round). I need a diameter of between 50 and 60 mm (or thereabouts).

The castings are a bit rough - this was shortly before the original Reeves crashed, and the quality had been going downhill for a while... I'm tempted to scrap that beam, and build a new one from scratch from bar-stock, but I'll get it all finished first.

I have one, rather less progress over 20 years, although the cylinder and entablature/frame are done. A laser cut flywheel to replace a poor casting.

Funnily enough the ratty beam was something that held me back, knowing I would need to fabricate a decent one.

All those strange pipe castings that don't match the drawings too well...

I've used the poor castings anyway, on the basis that I wanted to finally finish the damn thing ! wink My painting technique leaves a lot to be desired too (got an airbrush for the next model)...

But today I finished her (after only 25 years), and she runs a treat on air. smiley. I found an elastic band that works as a temporary governor belt until I get a proper one.

I still have to make her a proper base and some ancillary pipework, once I've done that I'll post some pictures here.

I have some video of it running (.mov files) but can't upload them to my Albums. Does anyone know of somewhere that would host them so I could link to them here ?
