Phone Caller ID does not work

If you didn’t have caller display the you would have to use an answering machine of blocker system unless you want to answer every call, at least with the display you can answer some calls with certainty who is calling.

I did not read the full report, but seeing the call in the abstract for legislation to make the Internet companies responsible for closing fraudulent material, I think they do try but are so deluged by illicit and anti-social material they struggle to keep up. It may need only an hour or so of published life to be worth the criminals' while.

Also, how could they stop the false web-sites etc?

The only way I can see is by developing vast filter networks that vet all posts to identify wrongful materials, delete them un-published, and trace and block the source accounts with an automatic notification to the Police in the sender's country. Is that technically possible though?

It may be feasible for masquerades- is the posted site from the genuine version's address, or its source even in the right country, for example?

Whatever happens, it needs a concerted and cohesive approach by banks, IT companies and the security services internationally, but of course we all know some of the material is from countries likely for their own reasons not to take part.

We were always being pestered by nuisance calls, so I bought a BT branded cordless phone (actually have 3 phones but you can get just the one). This incorporates call screening and blocking facilities without any extra ongoing costs and can be used with any service provider.

Have had it for a couple of years now and it has completely stopped nuisance calls.

You can programme friends, family etc in and they get through straight away. Any number not in the list gets a recorded message asking who is calling. A legitimate caller responds, the phone then rings and plays the callers message. You can choose to accept or reject the call, or leave it to let the answerphone switch in. Scammers and nuisance callers don’t respond and also silent calls don’t even cause the phone to ring.

Cant recommend it highly enough.

It incorporates Truecall technology, but there are no ongoing costs.

Can't speak for the UK, but on this side of the pond the only spammers/scammers that don't respond in those circumstances are the ones that play a pre-recorded message and ask you to press a button. Just a subset of the total nuisance calls.

Any live caller will respond.

I can only say what I have experienced. In the 2 or more years we have had these phones, we have not had a single nuisance call. Before that, we were getting multiple calls per day.

We still get a few call attempts but the phone doesn’t ring, so I only know about it when I look at the call list.

I have just looked at the box and yes, the one I bought is BT and Truecall branded though I think I bought it from Argos ( of blessed memory...).

I'm not sure why I thought I needed buy an extra BT function to use it Either I mis-read the instructions or that is some extension to the basic service.

Yes, the phones I have are BT branded and say incorporates ‘Truecall technology’.

They work with any operator and don’t need a subscription as long as you have caller ID enabled on your line.

I had originally looked at buying a standalone Truecall box that sits between your incoming line and your phone(s), but it was more expensive than the phones to buy. Also it only included 12 months full access to its features, after that you had to take out a subscription. With the BT phones you just need to buy the phone(s).

We use caller display a bit different to some, apparently.

If the caller name comes up, it is fairly certain it will be that person, but if a number comes up we consider what to do - either answer with caution or leave to go to ansafone. Simple as that, so it works perfectly OK for us.

There will always be people who get duped - or the scammers will simply find another line of ‘work’.

There are some entertaining videos of scammers getting hit back on YouTube, one chap gets into their computer and deletes Gb of data while winding them up on the phone. I hope it’s true.

I like the Mark Rober you tube videos, where scammers are tracked down and people involved get their come-uppance. His glitter bombs have developed. Some phone scammers and some doorstep delivery thefts.

Ofcom are widely publicising the fact that caller ID can be spoofed and should not be trusted.

My poor dad is inundated by daily scam calls, we've been discussing a call blocking phone as Virgin don't allow you to easily block calls.
