Congratulations to all who have given up smoking, however I am not impressed about the comments made about old people can't work out if they are some sort joke or serious comment, I am 74 like my pipe and use a e cig now and then, I managed to get off fags 3 years ago but on the rare event I have a tipple I like a fag, mind you I do agree about the benefit brigade, well some of them anyway

When I started work I was shown my bare desk, real wooden one with burns down one edge from stubbing out fags and got an apology that the ashtray had gone missing. Had I been a smoker I would have been able to bring in the cast aluminium one made in the one day workshop training at university. I wonder if they still think that a useful exercise.

Hello all, March 19th 1983 I packed in. Had a cold and thought why am I smoking ?. But I didnt tell anyone I was giving up, which strangely helped. Used to love fags too sad. My mother smoked 40 Woodbines a day until she was 60, packed in just like that. Lived until she was 91.

Our beloved representatives ( MP's) of all colours, agree that the national minimum wage is around 8 quid an hour, the average working week under the Working time directive is around 40 hours . In my primary school maths, the government are saying that a person can live on £ 320 per week. give or take a few quid.

On that basis, how come anyone can be offered benefits that amount to more than that sum ? Equally important for many of us on this forum how come a young fit able person deserves £320 per week but a pensioner only deserves around £120. ????

Obviously maths is not the Government,s strong suit

Maybe smoking is the only thing she enjoys?

Maybe you could be put in charge of what people are allowed to do. What would be on your list of things a poor person couldn't do - smoke, drink and have children obviously. Could they have a TV? Probably only up to a certain size or else it would be "a massive TV".

Stopped smoking in 1984 - but at one point I could go through about 50 cigarettes a day. Didn't smoke them all myself but it was customary to "crash the ash" if others were in the room. Of course, you also normally took a fag if one was offered. But this was BAOR and a pack of 200 State Express 555 were 7 shillings (old money) - about 35p new - and for the same money I could buy a litre of Bacardi - so as a young soldier it was possible to smoke and drink as much as I wished really - and many did.

By the 80's I was a family man and wanted to stop (couldn't afford it now) and had several tries. What finally worked for me was to try and not have a fag for as long as possible - and then next time try to beat my own record. I didn't tell anyone - just saying I didn't fancy one at the moment. Since in the early days -- I was only managing a few days between them, people didn't notice at first. Once I got up to six weeks they did but by then I was on a roll and feeling like I could do it. This was helped by the fact that my wife has never smoked, so at home there was no temptation.

Many year later, I sure I'm much healthier but still dread getting a cold, as it does get on my chest and I have nights of coughing until it clears. I'm sure smoking did a fair bit of damage in that respect. I don't drink Bacardi these days - a glass or two of red suits me better - or as a real treat - a measure of Pussers rum if my matelot friend is visiting and he decides to spoil a pongo!

Regards,

IanT

Drinking and smoking are two things which can be cured by lack of money. How do I know ? Very simple,I have yet to meet the barman who will supply me with drink unless I pay him cash. They say it,s "An Old Spanish custom".

If these people want to drink/smoke themselves into a wooden box,let them at it,but dont expect everyone else to help them along the way.

I see the same thing over here and it just gives me A-P-I-T-A Food has never been cheaper so if someone cannot feed themselves these days, they must have very expensive tastes or be downright thick.no
