mike T, Broughton lubricants are who the brothers employers deal with and I get it through them. They get it in 1000ltr tanks or 208 ltr drums, I use the 20ltr size [which is the smallest available] Hysol XF is fantastic stuff yesand lasts for ages. I really dont think it would be available in smaller quantities than the 20 ltr. You could contact Castrol directly and they will be able to tell you for sure.

Cheers.

I sell oils on ebay but not Hysol XF at the moment. If anyone is interested I will get a 20 litre and break it down as I'm sure it will sell. Looking at Broughtons price it would work out at about £11.50 per litre including post. That price would only be for people responding to this post. I am away on holiday soon but will sort it out when I get back.

Hi David, That sounds a very good idea, at least folks will be able to get it in more suitable quantities. You would be best to advertise it as specifically, Castrol Hysol XF and not just soluble cutting fluid. [but you know doubt already know that ] Im sure it would shift quickly. especially in the litre sizes. It is water tolerant hard or soft, extremely stable, and very, very long life. never any staining [even on yellow metals ] truly at home across a wide range of metals. I know I must sound like a salesman for Castrol.smiley. maybe I should apply for a job as a Castrol rep !!! lol.

Cheers.

Me too - I could manage 2 or 3 litres if that would help. I assume the price makes sense.

Modified the nozzle on the lathe coolant pipe and the neatcut does now trickle out which is okay for me as I do not want it gushing out. Took the pump out from the mill and it looks like the gauze on the suction is to fine, so I will look for an alternative gauze and give it a try.

Hi Clive,

I don't have any gauze or screen on my coolant pump intake it would
be a bad place to have it whatever type of coolant /cutting oil
used as the small area can soon become clogged.
I have 4 machines which use the neat cutting oil and all of them
have a primary catch tank to trap washed down swarf, the oil travels
over a weir then into the bottom tank which remains clean.
With your Warco HV machine it has a very small tray at the base
much the same as my mill ,i use some made up extension wings
to catch overspills i think you would probably need something similar.
An overtray could incorporate a primary catch tank and would avoid
a difficult job cleaning out the main coolant tank .

As Nick_G posted.

"I find that if a good quality soluble is used the water evaporates away
and leaves a nice thin film of protective oil on the machine".

This or course does not take account of the evaporated water that
has disappeared into thin air only to magically reappear now completely
devoid of any rust inhibiting properties on every metal object .

As Neil Lickfold posted

"Clive, the best and longest lasting machines I have worked on, never used soluble oil on the machines. They used straight cutting oils, that were thin

like a honing oil. The machines that used soluble oils had wear in them as to the almost new condition of the cutting oil machines. I'm a convert of

using oils and not water based coolants now ".

I would agree with that ,my Warco lathe i have had for eighteen years and
has used neat cutting oil in all of that time ,the slideways are still like new.

If you go with cheap coolant, ie soluble coolant and by cheap i mean
on a volume by cost basis it could be dearer in the long run.Just recently
a thread on a Myford 280 lathe the owner seems to be faced with a with
a bill for about £900 .00 to have the bed reground ,whilst we don't know the
history of the machine the most likely cause is poor maintenance / lubrication.

Hi John,

I note that my lathe does not have any gauze, so good point. My mill does have an extended tray with large wings as you describe, it came with the machine. I have drained the coolant tank at the moment and am trying to research a low viscosity cutting oil without much joy. Millers and morris oils do some but in large quantity's, Sure Chemicals do 5ltr sizes but no specs and they recon it stinks. I have even thought of mixing the neatcut that I have with sewing machine oil which is thin and relatively cheap. I do not want to go the coolant route.

Hi Clive,

Couple of photo's in album Workshop and machines ,of
J & L advantage flyer for June Exel suds pumps on offer
and from the from the May edition Exelcut 401 neat cutting oil
the price ends for this June 10th works out about £3 a litre
inc the vat ,i don't know if this will be thin enough for your
requirements i have used this for years and found it
to be ok.

£15 here for 5Ltrs not £19.5 for 4 Ltrs **LINK**
Works out cheaper than J&L rip offs VAT added plus delivery.

Currently low on Castrol Cooledge BI got 20Ltr cheap last year about 2Ltr left, found no difference to Smith and Allen and other cheapy stuff from local tool merchants all leave an oil residue when water evaporates and don't stink. Just need topping tank up about 4Ltr of water a week same as any other, more now warmer weather.

Did have a session last year with 5Ltr fully synth but couldn't get on with an opaque liquid coming out even though was doing the job.

Neat I will use for tapping 30% of the time that's about it, coolant is used with more force to clear debris. Neat and coolant will splash the same so no argument. At least with coolant can wash machines down and leave an oil residue.
