An old toolmaker trick with a fixed reamer to make it cut over size is to put a piece of shim on one side.

John McN, I have a bunch of reamers like yours. They were probably ex-Ratier factory at Figeac SW France. I was told that they were "Anti Chatter" especially good on thin material. .

Thanks Bob

That is interesting, I will try it out over the weekend. It looks like the Ratier factory served the aircraft industry.
You have to wonder how it ended up in country Australia?

J

I've seen adjustable reamers reduced to just one cutting edge in gunsmith's workshops, use for either taking a very thin skim out of shotgun barrels or opening tight chokes. I've always been told the objective is to prevent chatter. The traditional lubricant for these jobs is lard.

When I had to rebush my father's front suspension in prep for new kingpins, I took my brass tag to the tool room stores and borrowed the right size for the weekend!

Thank you Pierre

I am keen to try this reamer out, will do so over the weekend.
I have always admired French engineering, Thinking outside the square.
The Citroen suspension system is a good example.

But for me the Cazeneuve Lathe is the machine I would love to own.

Hi Mike

Yes Howe in the Modern gunsmith (Two volumes) 1941 uses a reaming tool packed with wood to enlarge shotgun chokes. There are lot of (hand made) single lip drilling and reaming tools covered, the tool making is outstanding.

Hi John, The Modern Gunsmith sounds like a most useful pair of books, and thank you for letting me know about them. Unfortunately, the only second-hand volumes I can find cost £125, which is a bit too much for me at the moment. I shall keep looking.....

Regards,

Mike
