On water and cars, in the old days it was well known that many cars ran better on damp, foggy days. You used to be able to get devices that gently introduced a small amount of water to the inlet manifold. It isn't snake oil - read up on Focke Wolf water injection to see what it can do - 1,600hp up to 2,000hp. The normal system was methanol water (to stop freezing) but pure water could be used. The methanol was also added to aid evaporation and stop detonation

Propane is a welling gas so should not be stored below ground level! Hydrogen is very easy to produce, just pass an electric current through water!

Thread: Plastic Ban | |||
19/04/2018 10:07:55 | |||
The press are missing the most critical factor. Most plastics are made from oil production waste by products. If we stop producing all plastics what happens to the oil production waste?

Very nice! I spent two weeks learning how to make my own turning tools.

This is what I would use if using filler rod.

I have silver soldered numerous vintage propshafts. I use silver solder strip and press the joint together and then heat up the joint. No gap.
Thread: Argon gas | |||

BOC do 3 types of welding gas. Argoshield light and heavy, these are are Argon CO2 mixtures and they do pure Argon for TIG welding.

Do you want Argon or Carbon Dioxide. They are not the same. Try a friendly pub landlord for CO2?

Thread: Tufnol (Textolite) as a material for pulley

Ford V6 engines have tufnol cam gear drive the valve train and the do fail but only after high mileage.
Thread: Ajax AJ8 horizontal Mill - cracked casting
30/03/2018 09:50:12 | |||
First thing I would do is make a square plate to connect the four mounting holes to stop the crack moving.I know this will lift the column by the thicknessof the plate. Then stitch it using a backing plate.
Thread: filling cast iron blow holes

Chemical Metal is the best solution. Countersink the holes both sides so the filler is wedged in.
Thread: Spindle not running true
25/03/2018 13:09:58 | |||
Shafts can bend spontaneously due release of stress's. I worked for a large sugar mill and we removed a very large old lathe, which twisted to hell when we undid all the bed bolts. Also long carnakshafts have to be stored vertically to stop them twisting. Posted by Brian Wood on 24/03/2018 18:28:20:
Forget the spindle bending, that can't happen spontaneously, but what else has gone wrong I can't think other than you now have grossly slack bearings which are allowing the spindle to flop about Sorry Brian

Read George Orwell's 1984 and you realise how far ahead of times he really was! The olny way to stop people spying on you is to drop off the radar. No phones, no internet, live off grid and put any bills in someone elses name. Takes about 5 years and then you disappear off the system. Edited By vintagengineer on 22/03/2018 08:55:15

Thread: Tin plate | |||
18/03/2018 13:06:04 | |||
I restore vintage cars and we used to use Tern plate but it got banned by the EU! So now I make up the parts I need in bright steel plate and then get them tin plated.I use these people for the tin plating and are very good. **LINK**.
Thread: Drawing board v CAD
18/03/2018 10:02:23 | |||
The thing I like about CAD is you can draw full size items which you cannot on on a drawing board. I once had a commision to make a triangle shaped steel grill to go under a set of stairs in France. The only way it could be made without going to France and taking the measurements myself. I got the client to measure the 3 sides and then I drew it up in CAD to get the correct angles.

Thread: Is society becoming more stupid
10/03/2018 17:33:27 | |||
I went to B&Q to buy a small axe and they were all blunt, I enquired as to why they were blunt and was told that if they were sharp someone might injury themselves. How stupid of me not to have thought of that!

No, but it's a substitute for poor engineering!

An A4 sign in the local Halfords. "AdBlue is not a substitute for engine oil."

I think people are becoming very lazy and relying on technology rather than using ther brain and common sense. They blindly believe whatever the computer tells them. |
