There is a small piece of metal rod under each screw. Remove the screw and Get some thin oil in there.

The Boxford book is very good.
A search of south bend 9 inch lathe on you tube will give lots of results. Except for the spindle bearings your lathe is very similar.

You are right , it is a model C made in 1958.

Your lathe has the same rear drive as the original South Bends.

Most later Boxfords had the motor inside the stand, or a under drive UD.

ER collets have to be snapped into the nut. I did not do this when i first got a mill and was very dissapointed with the chuck`s runout.

The spring goes into the slot,you wind it up by turning the lid with two hands and secure it with your third hand when it`s thight.
