Thread: Surface Grinder refurb
06/10/2022 23:25:10

Albeit on a shorter table, so less overall area to scrape off, but mine were something like 12 thou high at one end and 14 at the other, so I ended up taking nearly 15 thou off each end and one thou in the centre.
This was where I found myself taking a long time, due to trying to save money using a variety of lumps of carbide, all of which were all the wrong grade.
Tough yes, but unable to take, or maintain a very sharp edge.

It was also during the first lockdown, so obtaining stuff was a bit more difficult.

Are you using the correct grade of carbide yourself?

Yes, it's a screw on extension; I've made several more to quickly swap wheels without having to re-mount them on the spindle. Obviously that doesn't help if you need to use something on a short spindle projection.
Not in the workshop now, but I think ½" BSF Left Hand

Did the FFX link work; they appear to be UK landed and dispatched from Kent, as well as being cheaper.

There is a huge amount of stuff here (contact website owner for download permission): http://bedroom-workshop.com/index.htm

Have you ever tried to contact the owner with any success?

I've tried, both for download permission, and also to offer some more documentation scans, but I've never had a reply, or even a read or delivery receipt.

...which indicate the headstock spindle/bearings has 0.007'' run out.

Could be that the spindle is fine but the test bar is not seating properly in the headstock taper.

Not that I'm any expert, but it would be my first point to check.
Do you have any blue, the greasy stuff, not layout blue.
At a pinch you could try a tiny bit of lipstick.

The zip file containing documentation from the old Dore Westbury Mill Yahoo group has now been sent off to those who've asked for it.

The link should remain active for 7 days, so if anyone missed out, drop me a PM with a real email address.

Just sent you a PM

And replied, but unfortunately failed as it doesn't like my address either.
I wonder if it needs to be a registered business address?

Thread: Irritated by ebay
05/10/2022 12:22:10

That's an odd one; I wonder if it's some sort of a glitch in the software, with the item coming direct from China.
I've just viewed it myself, and it correctly displays the full price including VAT, but I've obviously not been offered the discount (yet).

Several times, I've seen an item I've been interested in, and retained the item from a number of different sellers in my Watched Items list.
I then sit back and wait for a week or two and see if one of those sellers then offers one of the " I see you're interested in this; have a discount" emails
It's saved be quite a bit of money over the years, but only if you're in no rush for the item.

Most, but not all, have been UK landed items though.

The other possibility in your case, would be to not take up their "offer" but to submit your own on the original page, which should show the correct total sum.

Thread: Expanding mandrels.
04/10/2022 23:43:07

Tobler do them, but I suspect the price might be rather higher.
https://www.tobler-workholding.com/en/standard-expanding-mandrels/

So do RC-Machines, but only morse taper arbors, rather than the ARC Eurotrade parallel ones
https://www.rcm-machines.com/en/machine-accessories/expanding-mandrels

I have some of the ARC ones; they do seem to work quite well, if a bit rough around the edges.

Various people do 5C ones, but they seem mainly designed for one off jobs and need turning to size for each one.

You could also look up "Expanding Arbor"  on ebay for something similar; look for 8 of them standing up in a wooden block.

Other info available from Weller's own website, about the W61 as well as the type I use, which is where I found the issue with mine.

Well after I'm not sure how many years, I think I've sussed it with my iron.

I've been retired about 8 years now, and had prolonged correspondence with our procurement people whilst I was still at work about this.
It seems either Weller, or my employer, supplied us with an iron with the wrong tip(s)

The one fitted was non-magnetic, and intended for a non-Magnastat soldering station.

I think your scraping is improving, it looks a more consistent on your last image. I hope I didn’t send you down that power scraper rabbit hole; I have been working on mine on and off for months, it’s Makita based as I can get parts for it relatively cheaply. The main issue is balance as the scraping gubbins is heavier that the saw blade & clamp. I have increased the counter weight but need to do more testing. It can produce a nice even pattern so I think it will at least do for initial roughing. There is an alternative design on the Tube base on what looks like a windscreen wiper motor, the design is good but it’s more of a scratch build but I am tempted.

Edited By Tony Ray on 03/10/2022 00:42:55

That's interesting, I picked up a Makita one myself, specially for that attempt at a conversion, but haven't started yet, as I was struggling to come up with an easy way to vary the stroke length due to the internal design.
How did you address that?

I got one but my battered original is still going strong

I got the angle thingy as well

Store the angle gauge with the battery out; it drains quite quickly, but other than that, a very handy gizmo.
The drain on the caliper is quite high too, compared to a high end model, but I gets more use, so less of a problem in some ways.

Thanks, I missed that.
Since mine is on a simple ¼" jack and separate 50v transformer, I might have an experiment with an in-line AVO and an extension lead with exposed contacts.

John,
Your issue is almost certainly a faulty switch in the iron. When worn they sometimes weld closed. a slight knock wil release it and it will work for a while then stick again. New switches are available.

Robert G8RPI.

Is the switch part of the heater element, and thus voltage dependent?

Mine has the opposite problem and never heats up unless you shake it for a while, and then only stays hot for a short time. It works when you first power it up, and then cools off immediately.
It's been like that since new; it's ex-BT, as am I, and we were told the feature was designed in as a tip saver.
It still drives me round the bend as it needs re-shaking every two or three soldered joints.
Not a major problem for maintenance folk, who were only changing a component or two, but I was construction and soldering hundreds + connections per day.

The iron itself is a 50V one, hence the query on the switch/heater. I'd consider a replacement iron, but I have loads of spare tips for this one.

If anyone is struggling for info. PM me your real email address and I'll attempt to send a large zip file via one of the free file transfer websites.
It contains much of the content of the old Yahoo Dore Westbury group, and runs to about 125 MB, so certainly for a PC/Apple not for a mobile .
