Thread: How do I delete my account?

As always just a little behind here.
What is the benifit of having ones account deleted vs not visiting the forum?
Thread: Not a "modeller"!
24/08/2014 11:25:49
I have no wish to take odds with any opinion already expressed in this thread.
Here's my opinion.

I have made in card or paper models of archimedian solids.
Probability shells for atoms. (peel models).
Boats

All for a purpose behold a table ornament.

I make models smaller than the "real" thing..sometimes smaller to save time/cost ( a1foot model of athirty foot boat )
Sometimes bigger ...if the atom is too small model it large enough to see...
I generally have no intrest in making copies ( larger or smaller than) of objects that teach me nothing....
I might model part ( say the valve gear) of a loco but don't want the whole thing..
Weather I model in voxcels or wood or plastic or brass or card...doesn't matter..The purpose is generally the same..to in form

Any way thats my purpose.
Thread: Breaking Vacuum Cleaner news for Model Engineers...

Oh come on.
If the eu ( anyone else remember when that was eEc?) chose to "outlaw" a certain class of hoover in favour a lower power one ( and shall we say in favour coincidently of a certain" digital" motored that promises more suck for less noise and power)..this should promote renewed sales and scrappage of current models...all more trade for manufactures..and production ..oops not in eu but in far east..nice try....
Upside..lots of redundant motors for re purposing...
Thread: Damaged Sieg C0 lathe...what to do ?
21/08/2014 08:54:40
Those out there shouting that the contract is with the supplier might not be in Brian 's position. .local..etc.
True it's the suppliers responsibility but its Brian stuck without a lathe.
Maybe once the dust settles on the issue , he will reach satisfaction .
21/08/2014 08:48:15
Good move.
You will at least be better informed about this lathe even if your solution lies elsewhere
20/08/2014 18:34:42
Not knowing the sieg...

I suspect the supplier is at least in part trying to get you on air as quickly as possible.

Why not look at the manual. .in the installation guide. .it may transpire that that cover is taken off when wiring the unit.

If so , take the cover off and see what damage has happened...and take it from there...the damage may be purely cosmetic and you may be able to reach satisfaction before December. ..maybe...

....^.... exactly
20/08/2014 08:46:24
Mmm the old ...."why make it when a bought one is cheaper than the metal to make one " argument.

Well I can see both sides

But I watch will interest as to the techniques.. ( what? not got a mill with tilt table..!)...
And it looks like you have access to someone who can verify the accuracy ( for your needs) .....no small problem so lucky you...
Good on you!

Thread: British machine tools

Consider the markets of say 100 , 50 , 20, 10, and now.

100 years ago expanding market ( empire)...orders for as many as you can make...quality /reputation sells ..in effect no competition so quality ensures next sale...
Spool forward 50 years...other companies ( countries ) in competition. .price sensitive and competing with your own product still going strong...
Spool forward 30 years.
Still competing with all your own prior production but now the competition is producing much cheaper stuff not so long lasting maybe but good enough ...
Skip forward to today. ..you make the same as the competition ( even rebadging where posible). And take your chances...
Some Companies 10 years ago moved production to china or other far east asia to cutt costs...some also cut prices but most just took the profit and laughed at the customer It is now, that the plant set up to make this product is making competing product ( sometimes just on different shifts)... When say the m &r micrometer is made on the same line as the mitatoyu. .as the noname....There might be no detectable difference esp if bought online...but can m&r etal still charge more? Or cry if they are in effect competing with themselves

Thread: Two short videos of a VFD in action
11/08/2014 18:52:49
Power = torque x rpm
( neglecting units for the moment)
So even with the torque the same (say) you can't
help but have half power at half rpm

"Ye canna change the laws of physics".. (apart from the whole ftl thing!)

I too like vfd even when 3phase is available as input.

A further thought...waxed paper might help
11/08/2014 18:41:28
Sounds very much like electrolysis. ..two dissimilar metals seperated ( paper) by an electrolyte. . (Coolant)...have seen it between galvanised tote trays and parts...we found glossy paper better than ordinary paper...but you can get it in minutes on a bad day... ( in our case high carbon steel and galvanised tote tray)... not funny when you lose 150 parts at a time......moved over to lining trays with heavy gauge poly bag.. ( don't know gauge but 0.1mm thick)... two layers for safety. ..
In your case sorry but sure clamping will cut through the plastic...maybe change coolant from water based.....
We used to wash parts immediately if ali.just to avoid this problem
Thread: Changing grinder wheels for different size - advice required
10/08/2014 20:52:15
Apart from the usual safety advice re. hanging a new wheel.
Green grit wheels "shed"more than uusual. .its part of how they work...
So are particularly dusty..

Bonded diamond wheels (for carbide) cut better and cleaner. Don't need truing (can't be trued, so get the bushing right)..
I would still ring a diamond wheel but then though I have seen the result of a wheel bursting I have never heard of a diamond wheel bursting...

Thread: What drill bit for drilling 1 inch long 5mm hole through 10mm grub screw?
10/08/2014 11:14:05
Andrew makes a good point...

The thread engagement is made to be a reasonable compromise.
...for a nut which has typically 4-5 leads of thread engaged...
Now if you reduce the engagement but increase the engagement length?...whats the trade off.?
You will find it a brave design engineer that explores that...but the physics would tell..
Most commercial engineers lack the bravery or time to explore.
Thread: HSS cutting speed calculation
10/08/2014 11:05:59
I had cause to right a spreadsheet to calculate cycle times for estimating ( quoting) jobs for a machine shop...

Firstly my "estimate"..were within 2% of final optimised and leaned on cycle times some timemore sometimes high..
This took in ,material machinability, cermet ceramic, carbide, bcnt hss or what ever tooling.
Ok
So for a laff, I compared my childhood 10, 000 rpm / drill diameter (mm). Which I worked out for myself also worked for outside dia.

Again for hss and machinability 100% this matched to about 1/2 a percent.

Now to the real world...does YOUR lathe have constant surface speed?..variable to a tenth of a rpm?...
No , you will have a selection of speeds and at best steps of 100-200 rpm...

In short rules of thumb can be very helpful

I for one labelled my drill stand in rpm as well as diameter. .colour codeing sufficed. .
Thread: Independant 4 jaw chuck butchery
08/08/2014 20:27:08
Since you will be stripping down the chuck ..you will won't you?... any of the moving bits will immediately become clear whether they would be intersected by the drill holes..

Good luck

If its not mullered..
If pilot hole too small...such that the " cross hole" doesn't touch...
If pilot hole too large and all of cross hole in pilot. ..
Either will lead to in effect a plain cone rubbing on the hole and getting nowhere..
