Thread: How to set up a 3 phase inverter & motor for a beginner

Reporting poor work is from my experience is a waste of time ! I reported a gas registered CORGI fellow for poor and dangerous work - CORGI were not remotely interested . When I asked if spot checks were done on members work I was told NO ! Noel.

Noel

NICEIC members are subject to annual inspection which comprises the inspector checking invoiced works and deciding which he wants to inspect to confirm good practise and compliance with regulations.

On the subject of location of any VFD used to control a motor I am surprised that some haven't vilified Les for his installation on the drill pictured in another thread.

Going off topic, but one issue with the registration route like NEC-EIC is that only ONE employee needs to go through the registration process. They can then, if they wish, delegate the authorty to do the work to others. They do of course remain responsible but it seems some don't realise this or just don't care as long as they make money.

Robert G8RPI.

If you can provide evidence of non compliant with regulations work carried out by any NICEIC member in the interest of safety you as a professional engineer should report it to the relevant body.

I guess that the electrician who wired our immersion heater to the lighting circuit, and his apprentice who buried an LED power supply puck inside the loft insulation so that it overheated and burned out, would claim to be "competent persons". Frankly I thought they were a walking menace to the public.

John, if you haven't found an electrician yet use the following link, just enter you postcode to have a choice of NICEIC registered persons/firms in your area.

Any members who have lost parcels when using Herms/Evri, especially in the Norfolk area, may like to see a reason for parcels going missing.

A 3 pin plug. Huh mine is only 2 pin. The earath is just stuck in the ground. (not really)

You jest, but my workshop is earthed off a 5' long, 5/8"ø copper rod in the ground outside.

When I first moved in I tested the ropey looking electrics in there and discovered no earth... So off I was to Toolstation for a reel of 10mm² earth cable and a big rod.

When I finally had the cash to run a new (uprated) buried cable and such, I discovered the previous connection was a 3 pin socket buried in the ceiling, with the two red and black cores of the SWA coming through the wall wired into a plug, and a bit of green wire dangling from said plug looking like it had been crudely taped to the armour strands.

Not wishing to hijack this interesting thread but perhaps a welcome break for some with all this hot air around !!!

Unless the IEE Regulations have changed since I retired, and depending on the type of electrical supply (PME,TNS, IT) to the source of your buried cable supplying power to the workshop, when using an earth rod as a path for fault current from final circuits in the remote distribution board the size of cable needs to be 16mm and the armouring should not be connected but insulated from touch in the detached building, the remote board requires the 240v AC supply to be through a DP 30ma operating current RCCB to provide shock protection.

Thread: Simulation of toolpaths in Fusion 360 - personal version
28/12/2022 22:35:37

Hi John

Just loaded a STEP file into Fusion 360 Hobby and had to go to Manufacturing and complete that before Simulation became available.
I had previously saved the Model as STEP file that had not been through the Manufacture process so did not expect Simulate to work straight off.

Thread: Can i reverse this motor ?
23/12/2022 22:30:12

Hi Wayne

Yes you can reverse the motor, appears to be cap start so you need to establish the ends of the start winding so you can change them around, that will reverse the direction.
There may be a schematic on the net if you search.

About 3 weeks ago I manufactured some items for a shop down South. These items were posted first class sign for. After a week they had not arrived, I looked into the compensation claim procedure. The parts were worth approx £300 due to the time to make them. The material cost was about £30. The post office wanted proof of costs of items and proof of postage so I could claim £30. How can you find proof of cost and they needed photographic evidence. Total waste of time. The items arrived after 10 days. Never had problems with EVRI.

Hi Peter

Sorry to hear of your problem claiming but it is always best when sending anything of such value to ensure the service used provides adequate compensation in the event of loss or damage, Royal Mail SD is suitable for most small packages with up to £500 cover.

Switched the laptop on this morning and after a few minutes noticed a lag when giving any command both with the mouse and keyboard, it didn't take me long to realise Windows was downloading some updates as when this happens always the same effect on the machine.

Left the machine for an hour to download and when returning the red spot was showing in the bottom menu bar indicating Windows had updates waiting to install, switched to Update and Restart and left it,

3 hours later it's still not finished, total time taken was 3hrs 20 mins, is this the norm or is it my computer needs upgrading ?

Thread: Axminster piller drill wont start but humms...
09/12/2022 12:58:43

Hi Jon

Whoever tasked you to repair the drill must have some confidence in your ability to effect a repair so I find it strange you would need to ask such a question, unless of course you are just seeking confirmation of your diagnosis.

As said by others check the capacitor if fitted and the centrifugal switch for correct connections and operation.

Thread: Aliexpress/Bangood and import duty
09/12/2022 12:52:11

Orders to both sites mentioned I have made since the rules changed have all had VAT deducted at point of sale and the amount shown on the invoice, I haven't been charged extra on any item.
Tthis is mainly for low cost items but would think it would also apply to greater value goods.

Hi Daniel

Sounds like you could do with someone living close to you who knows these engines and would be willing to visit and describe what's required, they may even offer to machine any small parts needed.

To get such help your location is needed, just a full postcode will help.

Thread: Machining eccentrics
03/12/2022 21:18:44

Nick

If you are getting variations in level of machining on the face perhaps your mill needs tramming, using the boring head will, if the sweep of the tool is greater than the width of the part, not show a different level but may make one side thinner because of the out of alignment of the head to the table.
