Thread: Turning tool holder

Have you considered using a left handed boring tool that takes the TPG inserts, you would of course fit the tool as a normal boring tool but use on the OD and not ID.

If you make your own you could use silver steel and harden and temper if required.

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2016)
13/01/2016 22:27:12

The same can happen with what some term better brands, about 5 years ago I ordered and received a better brand chuck, it was 80mm diam 3jSC and cost £125, on inspection the jaw numbers didn't match the chuck number, when checked a ground rod for TIR it was way out of spec. To be fair to the supplier they did pay the return postage and provide a replacement that came within the chucks spec.

It is always an inconvenience when things go wrong but usually the well known ME suppliers will put things right.

I read Steven Jay Gould's criticism of the way horse evolution has been presented over the years in the bath this morning.

Trying to draw an evolutionary 'bush' for lathes would be far, far more complex!

Neil

A major part of the work for UK and some other manufacturers has been done by Tony at Lathes UK, no doubt some manufacturing history will never be known.

John

The Compact 8 had straight cross bracing to the bed rails, Orac has diagonal bracing but heavier than shown for the Emco V10P on Tony's site . It seems the Orac and Emcomat 8.6 were both introduced in the late 70's and have many similar visual design features, not surprising as they were both chasing the same market.

Doesn't the same apply now to a greater extent with different badges on the same castings ?

Anyone got the method of gearing by which Erikkson with the Tenthset boring head can provide movement in .001mm (.002mm on diameter) increments.

Ian, the Denford Orac is a mile away from the Emco 5 and Compact 5 cnc/pc machines in bed design and strength, also marked difference in capabilities when working. I am not knocking either as both machines are good at what they were intended to be and will do a range of lathe work to repeatable tolerances.

Thread: Problem with electric motor
09/01/2016 12:54:40

I agree the drawing John has provided suits a 3 wire motor such as a Parvalux but the OP motor has the ends of both windings in the connection box, this makes me believe it is possible only the start winding requires a capacitor. The resistance will be different on each winding if this is the case so is easily checked with a multimeter.

If windings are identical resistance then use a 240v10A SPDT centre Off toggle switch to fit as John's drawing, the live to the centre pins and the windings/capacitor on the outside pins, this type of switch will provide fwd/off/rev for your tool grinder.

Thread: Propane bottle gauge.
09/01/2016 09:48:08

John F

I think the same can be done in the US but in the UK most gas bottles do not have a float type cut-off that allows 100% safe self filling. Calor who are the prominent player in the bottled gas industry make a fortune just refilling bottles, the prices charged per litre of gas is astronomical, but then they do collect empties and deliver the filled bottles back to the distributors !!!!! The cost of a re-filled 6kg bottle is very high when compared with the 13kg.

There are some very expensive re-fillable bottles available but are not always welcomed at the gas pump for refilling, even with an external inlet point, some motorhomes have gas storage tank facilities as gas converted cars so don't experience difficulty filling.

Agree with Andrew and if it goes the wrong direction change those 2 wires around.

Try a 6uf 400volt motor rated type to start with, should be enough to kick it away.

JA is correct, weight stamped on the ally disc is in lbs and ozs.

I have a record of the 13kg gas size weighing 27.5kg when full.

Hi Graham

Can you post the details off the motor plate ? are you sure it's not 1/3 HP as 1/3 kW sounds unusual.

Some small motors are just induction motors and need a capacitor in circuit to start and run, not all have the centrifugal switch referred to, Parvalux are induction without any switch.

Thread: Emco Compact 5 Motor Problem
05/01/2016 22:58:21

Mike, it is only on later model lathes where the rotary (contactor type) cnc/off/man switch is fitted, the model prior to that had a 3 position rocker with man/off/cnc function. Earlier than that was a white 2 position on/off rocker switch.

Got the parts for the conversion, thanks for the drawing.

John

The PM motor cct on the original controller went out from the PCB to a 3 pin socket on the back panel.

The positive went via a switch to an ammeter then through a choke to the skt, the negative direct from the board to skt. The motor was earthed by an external earth conductor between the main earth terminal and motor case.

If there is an earth fault on the motor when run on a bench all will seem OK if the earth is not connected, except it would be dangerous to touch the casing if you were not insulated from earth mass, 180v DC won't do you much good.

As soon as the motor is fitted to the machine, even without the supplementary earth bond, there will be an earth path from the casing where the motor plate is fitted, switch on and the voltage fault to earth ruptures the fuse.

A user close to me has the same problem on a F1 mill which has the same type of motor fitted.

Hi John, you said in an earlier comment about getting a cnc lathe 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure it was in 1995 at Ally Pally MEX that someone was demonstrating an Emco PC cnc lathe, the small one (NOT SL) with 2 circular rails for a bed, anyone else recall that far back ?

Have you read all those ME's yet or were they otherwise disposed of ?

I get the impression that CNC is ok for manufacturing in bulk In a lot of cases, you could make the part manually in the length of time it takes to write the programe

I could be wrong

Roy

I have old hat Emco cnc machines, Compact 5 lathe and F1 mill, both operate using G&M codes either manually entered on the control panel or downloaded from a computer.

In reply to Roy the following 4 lines of code take less than a minute to enter and will face the end of a bar and turn it down on diameter for the given length. The program below is in Incremental mode but could also use Absolute mode, or a mixture of both. The tool is at known diameter and on line with the end face.

M03 Start spindle (0,3,-,INP) 4 keystrokes at panel

G X Z F H (code, X axis/cross slide, Z axis/saddle, feed rate, division of cuts)

G88 -1000 -100 100 50 Facing cuts 2 passes at .50mm DOC to face off 1mm total at 100mm/min

G84 -200 -2100 100 50 Longitudal turning 4 cuts of .50 DOC reduce diam by 4mm for 20mm length on bar.

M30 END of program, also stops spindle.

G88 and G84 are both cyclic codes and the tool returns to the origin after each cycle. It's possible to change spindle speed and feed rates during the program run.

Having used manual machines for many years and cnc for a few my vote is for a mixed machine workshop, like most thing it's great to have a choice.

Thread: SCLCR Boring Tool Geometry and TCT & HSS inserts
02/01/2016 16:03:34

Hi Peter

You are right to believe the flats are for clamping which dose give positive angle to the cutting edge/tip.

You can of course drill and ream or bore a hole through square section of material, slit end to end and fit the tool in the toolpost, set the insert at your angle of choice and tighten the clamp, finally adjust to centre height before clamping the toolholder.
