Hi, I did not think that silver solder came coated! Are you sure its not brazing rod?

Thread: Nu Tool miller
09/04/2012 21:10:42

In the autumn of last year i bought a milling machine from one of our club members. Nu-tool similar to Warco Major 3024YZ.>>

I messed about with it trying to make things, but only getting frustrated with it.>>

By chance I had the book by Harold Hall bought as a present, 49 in the series. I looked at all the things he has made with the same machine and decided i have to make the thing easier to use.>>

So last week i started to make some alterations. Firstly i changed all the cheap ratchet handles for good ones - Elesa, and removed the column locking nuts for some 1/2" ratchet handles. That made a great difference, no spanners needed! >>

In time i will take the column out and machine a keyway in it and fit a key to the rear of the rack, I get fed up having to reposition things when l raise or lower the column. >>

Next, I ground a flat on the front of the stop hole bracket to create a land to fit a forward facing bracket to mount a digital vernier on. I had a spare 6” one which would fit nicely, just below the top guard. I machined a couple of Ali brackets and hey presto a vertical readout. What a difference they make, no more guessing depths of cut or hole depths.>>

This then made me think about the x and y, so now it also has a y axis readout and again what a fantastic difference. >>

This is probably old hat to some of you but to me it’s a giant leap forward.>>

This coming week I am going to fit an old Parvalux motor gearbox I have onto the y axis and power it with an inverter. Cant wait, as my right arm is dropping off with winding the handle.>>

Cheers>>

Thread: Stainless steel boilers
01/04/2012 08:22:38

Not exactly a beginners thread but as I have no information I thought it apt.

In my professional life we manufacture production line machines, mostly from stainless steel where foods are concerned. So this makes me luck at having an endless supply of Stainless steel. By chance I was looking at the Maxitrack website and found that they offer stainless steel boilers. This comes as news to me and was wondering if there are any plans available for a bench test boiler or any boilers for that matter?

We have a few welders who are very capable of welding pipes (tig– purged) for our machines, as is required for hygiene, so I am sure one of them will be able to weld me a boiler.

How would a club boiler inspector feel about one of these?

Your thoughts and experiences please gents.

Thread: Turning / machining Aluminium - Tips

I agree with Nicholas, all the components for our label applicating machines are made from ali, well all most all.

The three engineering companies that we use all use Parafin. I even use it and as far as i am concerned there is nothing better.

The partsa re all de-greased and then anodized.

Parafin is the best lubricant for machining ali.

Reasonably high cutting speeds.

Dead sharp tools.

Watch out for ali with hi content of magnesium or you may end up with a hot workshop!

Brass will be fine. In time you may get de-zinkification but thats a long way down the road.

Thread: How Would You makes this?
26/03/2012 21:10:54

The bits below the running board look like a Hunslet i was watching at Porthmadog yesterday shunting flat trucks onthe new line that crosses the road.

I wanted to measure it up but they said i could not as it was working!

I will have to catch it when there not looking

Punch it but make sure the die takes the correct amount of metal otherwise if it take less than its own area you will end up with stretching.

Why not use a tangential tool. Its like a parting tool with a leg which goes down to the cross slide bed. They can be very thin and if it's kept sharp you only need the one.

Thread: SWEET PEA
31/01/2012 19:04:55
I have been thinking about building a 3-1/2" loco and have watched the posts regarding the smaller end of model building. I think that a Sweet pea would be a nice size to make with the added benefit of a larger model, so no fiddly bits like a 3-1/2".

It also looks like a lot of it can be made from stock materials.

Your thoughts and advise please gents.

We have loads of copper alloys machined at work. The engineers take the edge off the 'cutter' almost as if to blunt it. works a treat thought.

I just love how everybody tries to outdo the last post.

Your micrometer will be far more accurate than the vernier. I use the vernier to get close to finish size and then use the mic. Usually cutting less and less up to size. Tool has to eb sharp though.

Hope this helps

I have been watching fixed steadies and travel ones for boxfords on flebay. They make on average 100 quid and 50 quid respectfully. i got to 145 for a pair last week and then gave up!!
