I bought a cheap digital caliper from Lidls about 2 years ago, still working on the same battery !. The food seems a lot better than it used to be as well.

Finest aviator in Britain's history, that should read world's history. Interviewing heartless sadistic lunatics like Himmler, Goring, Grese, etc, never troubled him much either. Amazing bloke.

Hello all, was about to bin this shaper handbook but then thought perhaps it may be of use to someone. A bit tatty. First one to PM me with their address, can have it.

Iain, if your lathe has a leadscrew, why don't you motorise it a with small motor (wiper motor), controller, DC power feed etc at the RH end of the bed ?. I converted an ML7 with the same kit having got the idea off the net. Worked a treat. Just a thought. Have a look on Utube.

Thread: Daft question (maybe)
08/02/2016 13:03:01

Hello, pgk pgk mentioned Hardinge for a lathe for model engineering !. In my opinion, because I own a HLVH, and as superb as they are, would be hopeless for making models on, for a number of reasons. The tailstock is too heavy to keep pushing up and down the bed, the saddle is too wide, meaning work up near the chuck , awkward. Worse, with the standard 2 speed motor set up, the lowest RPM is 125,, which is too high for certain jobs. Just my 2 cents worth !.

Hello Nigel, any chance of some pictures of your engine and some information on it. Sounds an interesting project. Cheers.

Thread: Toolmaker builds his own flood defences

Douglas, + 1. Climate has been changing for millions of years, nothing we can do about it but put up up with it. Much of North Africa was green 1000 odd years ago, trees , vegitation, rivers and lakes etc, then the wind changed, and everything dried up. Then the morons in government say we must do something about climate change, like what ?.

Thread: Trouble with Rotary Phase Converter
29/12/2015 20:37:21

Speedy and John, thanks for the advice.

John, I might need to pick your brains if I get stuck ! Many thanks all.

29/12/2015 15:31:59

Hello Kwil, yes, thats the odd one out. Whether that brown ring is normal or faulty, Ive no idea !. Its certainly different to the rest.

29/12/2015 13:45:38

Hello all, using the lathe yesterday running off the RPC, when a funny noise came from the converter, best described as a muffled fart (sorry). Lathe still running OK, but thought I'd better have a look inside it. Slight burning smell, with one of the capacitors different to the rest. Its a Boost Energy made converter, bought second hand and probably seen a lot of use.

29122015184.jpgQuestions, does it look like the capacitor is toast, and is this common with the age of the unit ?. Also, would some other fault have caused this to happen, or will I get away with a new capacitor if it is indeed u/s ?.Thanks in anticipation, and a happy and healthy new year to all.

Thread: Steady rest - metal or roller bearings ?
09/12/2015 13:37:24

Emgee, your right, that's what I should have said !. Perhaps DSG thought the same by not fitting the steady with roller bearings.

08/12/2015 18:20:55

Capnahab, looks very much like a DSG steady you have there !. I've heard it said that roller bearing ones are more susceptible to chip ingress than your type.
