Thread: Spontaneous Combustion |
16/02/2014 19:10:42 |
Hi Chris, if your rag was used to clean vegetable oil (with unsaturated fatty acids) it might undergo spotaneous combustion, for instance see here, or here. When organic conpunds oxidise heat is produced. Thor |
Thread: display cases |
10/02/2014 18:29:51 |
The base/display case looks very nice Derek. Would it be a problem to use brass angle? Thor |
Thread: Thickness of Bahco Sandflex 12" hacksaw blade. |
10/02/2014 11:57:57 |
Hi Chris, sorry I forgot to mention that the blade I measured had 18 teeth per inch. I also measured a Starret blade (also 18 tpi), it measured just under 1 mm, so it seems that different manufacturers use different blade widths. Thor |

Hi Chris, mine measured 1.13mm. Thor |
Thread: Sieg C6 Lathe new threading possibilities |
10/02/2014 05:12:50 |
Hi Ian, if the chart is reproduced as a JPG you can save it in your album and show it in your post. If it is a program (or Excel file) you must save it somewhere on the web and link to it in your post. Hope this helps. Thor |
Thread: Internal keyway on a lathe |
05/02/2014 05:24:05 |
Hi John, if you have access to a milling machine and the pulley isn't to large for the milling table you could first mill the keyway before broaching. Thor |
Thread: Bigger Lathe |
01/02/2014 18:16:44 |
Hi Peter, if you can afford a new Boxford I believe you will get a good lathe. A used Boxford (or other "old english iron" Thor |
Thread: Diamond toolholder |
01/02/2014 05:41:22 |
As others have said, diamond or tangential tool-holders work well and it is easy to sharpen the tool-bit. I made a small one for my small lathe and it works very well. When I get time I will make a slightly larger one for my new lathe. Thor |
Thread: Warco GH 1224 screw cutting problems |
31/01/2014 18:55:02 |
Hi Trevorh, hope you manage to sort out the backlash problem. From the pictures you posted it seems you have a lathe with an imperial leadscrew. The threading dial table shows threads per inch and how to use when cutting imperial threads. I don't think you can use the threading indicator for an imperial machine when cutting metric threads - even if you hav a 127T gear. You should follow Mick's advice and keep the half nuts engaged while cutting metric threads. Thor |
Thread: Rotary Laser centre finder |
26/01/2014 16:00:41 |
Thanks for the photo/explanation of the Mk 2 version Michael (Cox). I have a laser pointer approximately 12mm outer dia. I gues a new project is coming up. Thor Edited By Thor on 26/01/2014 16:10:14 |

Hi Michael, Your version looks simpler (and cheaper ?). Is the angle between the laser and the centre line of the mill adjustable? Thor |

Interesting concept John, thanks for the link. Thor |

Thanks for the link John. Thor |
Thread: Re-starting after a number off years |
18/01/2014 05:09:22 |
Hi Jim, nice house, like the solar panels on the roof. The workshop looks like a place you could enjoy for a long time. I wouldn't worry about the workshop being too neat and tidy, swarf etc. will be there soon enough. Thor |
Thread: plans for oil gun/can?? |
17/01/2014 14:59:09 |
I use similar oil cans to the ones John shows in his link ( red paint though and I only have 3). Mine are cheap and work fairly well, I use the flexible pipe. Thor |
Thread: What have you recycled today? |
13/01/2014 18:15:05 |
I found a fairly large piece of 18mm thick steel in a skip, it's now residing in my garage waiting for my hacksaw. |
Thread: Identify an unmarked bottle of acid |
12/01/2014 06:21:40 |
Hi John, if you think it is either Sulphuric or Hydrochloric acid and they are concentrated, the hydrochloric acid gives off nasty fumes when you open the bottle. So does concentrated nitric acid. If there has been any steel objects stored close to your acid bottle and it contains hydrochloric acid the steel should be brown with rust. If diluted hydrochloric acid it will cause a white precipitation if mixed with a silver nitrate solution. Neutralizing the acid with lime (or soda) as recommended by Andrew works well. Andrew, if the bottle is made of glass I don't think it is hydrofluoric acid John has got. Thor Edited By Thor on 12/01/2014 06:22:10 |
Thread: Another Newb Question- Best cutting tool for tapers? |
11/01/2014 05:40:33 |
Hi Simon, you don't say what kind of tools you have for your Emco - HSS or carbide? If you are using HSS tools I would start with a roughing tool and and use a finishing tool for the last cuts. At the Sherline site there is an article about grinding your own HSS tools that you may find helpful. This site explains the lathe, tools and its use. Thor |
Thread: What have you recycled today? |
09/01/2014 05:33:24 |
Hi Danny, I too have dismantled old printers to get some nice steel rods etc. What I don't need in the printer goes to recycling. Most of the steel I use comes from the skip of a small shop nearby, I am allowed to take what I need (for free). And I empty the chiptray of my lathe into the same skip. We produce a lot of waste in my part of the world, so it is important to recycle what can be recycled. Thor |
Thread: What did you do today? (2014) |
02/01/2014 14:36:56 |
Today I finished a 28T worm gear for the HBM 290F lathe so I can use the thread indicator for M12 x 1.75mm pitch. This photo show the setup for milling the worm gear,
