I use a straight shank ER 16 chuck in a ER 32 collet when using small milling cutters, works well. Thor |
Thread: VFD Advice |
25/07/2022 05:49:20 |
Hi Steve, From the nameplate it seems like a 400V motor, it may be possible to open up the motor and re-connect it for 230V as Bill says. Is it possible to replace the motor with a newer one that can be connected either star or delta so you could use a cheap VFD? There are solutions that provide 3-phase 400V out from single phase 230V, one example here. Thor |
Thread: Thinking about going into model steam engine making |

BMS usually refers to Bright Mild Steel. The BMS part you refer to can be made from mild steel (I use black or hot rolled mild steel), start with a rod of large enough dia. and then turn to the largest dia. of the middle section. You could set over the topslide for the tapers. You could then mill the two ends, I would silver solder (braze) the end parts on since I have a propane torch. The piston can of course be split, or is the teflon ring split? Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 21/07/2022 06:36:54 |
Thread: Gearbox oil |
19/07/2022 18:24:48 |
Hi Steve, I use "gear oil" from a local supplier, the viscosity may not be correct so I mix in some ISO 68 oil. This has worked well for a decade on my 290 lathe. Just make sure there is enough oil in the gearbox and apron. I know that some use ATF fluid. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 19/07/2022 18:26:31 |

Hi Mark, Your engine looks good, well done. I have built a few steam engine model but only one beam engine; Rudy Kouhoupt's Walking-beam engine. Thor |

Hi, how do you adjust the tailstock to keep it from moving. chris m…. If not the cam, check underneath the tailstock. There is probably a nut that you could try tightening 1/6 of a turn and see if that helps. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 15/07/2022 10:34:18 |
Thread: Chattering when cutting with countersink tool on lathe |
11/07/2022 05:39:36 |
I assume your countersink tool is sharp. I have an old countersink with more than 3 cutting edges and it works better than the 3 bladed ones I have on my old Compact 8. I use a diamond hone to sharpen the cutting edges between grinding. Thor |

Thread: 3D printed houses |
08/07/2022 07:30:11 |
We would need proper insulation to be able to use such a house during winter, but as Rob says possibly OK for warmer climate like Madagascar. I didn't detect the use of rebar in the concrete layers or are my old eyes failing me? Thor |
Thread: Gear cutters |
07/07/2022 11:00:56 |
If you don't want to wait for RDG to get the No 3 cutter in stock you could try and make your own gear cutter. I have made a few myself from either silver steel or gauge plate - hardened and tempered. Mike's workshop has the tables with the dimensions needed. Thor |

Hi Chris, If you haven't already checked Harold Hall's website, he has an explanation on how to set up the lathe here. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 06/07/2022 18:30:37 |
Thread: A common fault among the hard of thinking. |

No Jon, you are not the only one. Doesn't happen with my inverter driven lathe as I have programmed it to start slowly so I can see which way the work rotates. Thor |

I have a set of HSS tools from ARC that has served me well for many years, they also do carbide insert tools. Thor |

Raymond Farrugia from Malta published a design for a Tumbler reverse for the Compact 8 in Model Engineer 18 September 1987. It involves some changes to the lathe. I have also seen a simpler solution but I don't remember where. Thor |
Thread: Lathe cross slide travel question |
04/07/2022 14:30:58 |
Hi Alexander, The PM-1022V looks similar to the Warco WM250 so you should be able to mount the topslide at either end of the cross slide or in the middle etc. so turning large diameter work (7" ) should be possible. You may have to use a boring bar type of tool but that has not caused any problem on my smaller lathe. Some have even made a new cross slide for their lathe. Thread: Simple Quiz... Missing Weight |
01/07/2022 13:47:37 |
Several good answers, Neil, if you have access to something to measure volume of liquid, you could use a certain volume of water to get the weights you need (you would of course, have to tare the container). Handy calculator here. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 01/07/2022 13:51:39 |
