Thread: inland seagulls |
29/04/2020 14:20:12 |
Ann and I have lived in our current house for nearly 30 years. We are around 25 miles from the nearest coastal point at Crosby on Merseyside. In all the time we have been here we have never seen seagulls in our back garden, until yesterday when a colony of them very aggressively made their presence known. Big b*****s strutting around like they owned the place. I understand that inland seagulls is not unusual but I can't help but think this must have something to do with the current coronavirus crisis we all face. 25 mile inland seems a long way to me so these birds must be pretty desperate. To add insult one, or more of them unloaded their bowels on my freshly leathered MR2. Unfortunately I didn't have a shotgun handy or I would blasted him all the way back to the coast. Anyone else seen inland gulls recently Geoff |
Thread: Drummond M type drive and parts query |

I'll have another look. I'm waiting on some new 1/8" balls for the thrust bearing..I only found 11 out of 16... Hi diesel You can buy a complete replacement thrust bearing from "simplybearings", fits perfect, stock number is FT 3/4. Go to thrust bearings, search 3/4" bore and it will come up. I would suggest that you go "V" drive with your headstock. Easy to do IF...... you can pick up a later drive pulley from a Myford built M type. Sadly easier said than done, but if you can get one it is a direct replacement for the Drummond cone flat belt drive pulleys. Get a copy of Lawrence Spareys the Amateurs Lathe. There is a good chapter on setting up a lathe for motor drive. A good example is for a Drummond B type on a Drummond stand, same as your stand and a similar lathe. It's an easy set up which does not require specific engineering skills, easily built by a good mechanic. Stick with it you have a great lathe, worth persevering. Geoff |

David Just had a look at your photo album. Nice work Geoff |

Hi David OK, I'm with you now and I can also now see the tap in the first photo. So presumably you machine the thread almost to size and skim out a small amount with the tap, good idea. Have you already fitted a nut to your M? If so I would be interested to know how you held the saddle then bored out to size for the nut. Geoff |

Good idea David. something I need to do but never get round to it. When you say screw cut AND tap what do you mean? Geoff |
Thread: Another Engine Build |

Hi Ron Another engine! Looks like you are becoming a prolific model engine maker, and why not. Jowett looks great, good that you have it running well. I like this engine, started making it last year but it's now "under the bench" Now I'm in s.i. perhaps it's time to get it back on top and get it finished. I assume you have access to J's m.e. article which is a good read with many useful machining methods. Geoff

Very nice David, some seriously good engineering there. And you also sorted that problem with the rack gear, my thoughts were you may have had duff from HPC which would have been a real surprise. Just looking back through some workshop notes and I made the pattern for this apron in 2012, 8 years ago, my how time passes by. Atb geoff |

Just when you thought it couldn't get any sillier, Woolworths Australia has issued a notice saying it will not refund the money for purchases of toilet paper to those now trying to take it all back to them. No wonder a bloke spends his life in the shed talking to ancient piles of scrap metal. Love that Pete Just been in Woolworths in Perth. Loads of toilet paper available. Panic over |
Thread: Muncaster No1 with Reverser BUILD & DRAWINGS |

I'm happy to take the blame Jason Engine looks great and like others I would be interested in details of the reversing mechanism. I made the muncaster reverser which works well but yours is neat in that it is built into the engine and not the supply line. Geoff |

We are in Australia at the moment, been here about 3 weeks. Last Monday Emirates flight Ek420 arrived in Perth with a passenger carrying the virus. She has now self isolated. Authorities are now anxiously trying to contact all passengers who were around the young woman. We fly back on Ek421 at end of the month, crikey makes you think!!!!! Airline bookings to Australia have now dropped by 77%. Geoff |

I dont know if Stuart flywheel castings are always as true and clean as this but I am certainly impressed. Hi Ron Well occasionally they are defective but the great thing about stuart castings is that they would rarely supply you with one. Even if they did and you found it to have flaws when machining they would send you an instant replacement. Excellent company. Unfortunately for me I bought one second hand on *bay and it was full of air holes revealed after machining. Lesson learned always buy from stuart models. The old adage, "buy cheap buy twice" applies Geoff |

Hi Jason Most if not all of the hit and miss engines that I have made don't have any form of balance to the crank and even my 2" Fowler does not all as per full size but they do have balance weight or hollowed out parts to the flywheel to provide the counter balance. The above paragraph, interesting, what I would describe as lateral thinking. Are you saying that if one component is out of balance, the crank, you also make the flywheel out of balance to counteract? Would the weights/hollows on the flywheel be at roughly 180 degrees to the crank pin and big end. I can see the logic and how it would work, but like I say lateral thinking and very interesting. Hi Ron, Yes 10/10 for the flywheel, stuart castings are ex quality, machine beautifully and will look great on your model!!! Nice work, looking forward to final pics and video. Geoff |

HI Ron and well done' With regard to balancing the engine. The flywheel needs to be as balanced as possible but without a balanced crank as well I can't see how you will ever have a good static balance and without that never have a good dynamic balance. To aid balance the crank is better with a crank web such that when you rotate the engine by hand it will NOT settle in the same place every time. The web can be adjusted for size by making it larger or smaller or adding weights to the web Three of the simpler muncaster engines have no balanced crank.? Just my thoughts Geoff |

HI Ron, Looks great to me and running well. Mine dances around at high speed, needs a heavier base. Next engine I made had a large 1/2" steel plate base, no chance of that going for a walk!!!! Post again Ron with new flywheel Atb Geoff |
Thread: A little bit upset |

Hi Jason, thanks for the reply. I noticed M machine had the ground bar but was concerned that M.S. was not durable enough for the job. Having said that I took a small file to test the hardness of the original barrel ( only on the end where it does no harm) and it files easily so it is probably a low carbon steel similar if not the same as M.S.. Any thoughts on the HPC gears, EN8 would now seem a good choice. I can't use the standard gears in M.S. as the tooth length is too short, has to be the heavy duty. Thanks again Geoff |
