Thread: Myford Lever Action Tailstock Design and Build |
22/03/2022 12:59:36 |
Hi Pete, I recall a comment you made some years ago, " it's amazing what you find inside a block of metal". nice work mate, I have followed this thread with real interest. ........and I'll tell you something, you will not regret making a lever tailstock attachment. Had mine 11 years, would not be without it. Geoff |
Thread: Lever operated tailstock attachment Myford |

Had mine for 12 years. One of the first accessories I made. The castings shown in David George's post earlier in the thread are cast from the patterns I made. Shown in the photo on a Myford M type and in answer to Davids question they are also good for the ML7. .............and for George, as hopper suggest, rotate it and have the handle upright. geoff |
Thread: Thompstone Engine |

Hi Paul, If you are using cast iron I wouldn't bother with silver soldering. JB weld is great and perfect for your application. Good advice from Jason, leave a small radius at the end of the slots, have a narrower channel, and don't get carried away using to much adhesive. Photo is of a cast iron cylinder I made recently, similar to the thompstone design. Geoff |
Thread: HE30/6082 Aluminium alloy |
27/01/2022 14:01:01 |
Hi Guys, Apologies for the delay in replying, life has been somewhat hectic! your comments have been of interest and of course informative, for which I thank you. Yes Bill you're right, hard anodising is pricey. I made an enquiry at a company nearby and was surprised how much it may cost for such a small item. I'm still proceeding with the same design and yes Neil I will post some pictures. Looks like it may be a "bitsa", of different materials, keeping the cost down but still having a reliable working slide (hopefully). Cheers Geoff |

Hi All, I have a Sherline lathe for which I am currently designing a topslide, I don't like the one offered by sherline but that's another story. I would like to make it from aluminium alloy and thought that HE30/6082 may be a suitable choice. It will be a traditional vee slide arrangment using a suitable gib strip and adjustment screws. Anyone thoughts opinions are welcome. I'm ok with the mechanics of it all it's principally advice on materials that I'm looking for, including the gib strip. Thanks Geoff |
Thread: What Did you do Today 2022 |

Different? I like it! You could say the arrangement linking the eccentric to slide is unconventional , but nevertheless very interesting and well made. Don't know your name but well done Geoff |

Yeah, the bees knees them air friers, they make great chips. Ady, Dan Quayle was the " potatoe " man, not Bush. |
Thread: bolton steam museum |
27/12/2021 11:35:54 |
Hi All, Tomorrow and Wednesday are steaming days at the museum, 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. both days. No admission charge and parking is free although a donation is gratefully received. I'm going tomorrow, well worth the drive if you have the time and if you love seeing the old girls in steam, as I am sure most you do, a great day out. I've no connection to the museum, I just admire what the guys there do. Geoff |
Thread: jury service |
16/12/2021 18:51:52 |
Well referring back to the original post, I've been reprieved or should I say excused from jury service. Very pleased, of course and having done jury service on two occasions one as foreman of the jury I really had no desire to do it again. All I did was tell them I was over 70 and that was it, simple enough. Whoever takes my place good luck to them, do your duty, as I did, twice, you never know you may enjoy it |

Just been through the over 70 on line licence renewal, no problems at all, DVLA is functioning well today. Geoff |
Thread: A Lightweight Husky |

Hi Jason, Thanks for the reply, that helps a lot. I found it difficult to see how the exhaust would work efficiently with the piston leading and therefore without a stroke of the piston backing it up, so to speak. But clearly it does and seems to be in some respects a matter of having sufficient surface area to allow the expanding steam to escape. I shall follow this project with interest. I would like to make it but my big problem is I have no silver soldering facility and I assume that will be how the exhaust is attached to the cylinder. Is JBW an option? Final point. The three exhaust holes, could that be an elongated hole cut through the side with a slot drill? Cheers Geoff

Very nice Jason, really like your design. Will be your popular 24mm size? Can you explain to me how the exhaust works? Hope that's not a daft question. It's the dynamics that puzzle me. Is there any significance in the shape of the exhaust, twin and being wrapped around the cylinder Would it function just as well with a single exhaust pipe at the front of the cylinder. Cheers geoff |
Thread: jury service |
01/12/2021 18:19:04 |
Thanks for the replies gents, The form is in the post Ady. Dave W's post sums up many peoples frustration with Jury service. For me it's a 5 mile early morning bus trip to the nearest main line station. Next a 20 mile rail journey on a crowded commuter train (covid filled train? ) into Liverpool lime street and then a 10 minute walk to the crown court, all in midwinter. When you arrive there is every chance you hang about for a while a then some clerk will come along and say " thanks for coming you can go home now, see you tomorrow. Prompt at 9 a.m. What waste of time!!!!! Well let's see what happens Geoff |

Roy, I'm proof that you do, age raised to 75 since 2016. |
01/12/2021 15:11:29 |
Just been summoned to do jury service in January. I've done it all before and as I'm now past 70 I have applied to be excused. I know there are many 70 to 75 year olds on here, anyone else been called, any thoughts you might offer/advice?

Duncan, How about a piece of upvc cladding. Eurocell on Winwick road often have damaged fascia offcuts at the rear of shop on the car park. Widest boards are 9mm thick and 250 mm wide. Geoff |

Thanks Rod, Not seen the double rod before, but certainly a good idea. Cheers geoff😎

Very nice Rod, you must have plentiful bits and pieces box. Who's your man Rod, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters? I made a guitar some years ago, les paul copy with Schaller golden 50 humbuckers. Not much of a player but sure enjoyed making it. I seem to remember inserting a curved steel rod in the neck. It had an anchor point in body and a thread and nut in the head. By tightening the nut you could straighten the rod a little which would counteract any flexing of the neck when the the strings were tuned. You don't seem to have rod in your neck Rod, excuse the pun, why is that? Geoff🤓 |

Hi Ches, Just the job mate and a few to spare. Are you doing the gas strut mod? If you are like me and really dislike the torsion spring swing arm assembly then it's well worth doing. Geoff |
04/11/2021 07:33:15 |
Hi Ches, I put levers on mine, like Jason said saved messing with an Allen key especially underneath the slide. Can't remember where I bought these but I noticed goodhanduk have 4mm levers in stock. Take care to make sure you get the right screw length. Edited By geoff walker 1 on 04/11/2021 07:34:14 |
