... their tools start from 16mm square shanks upwards

A typo, I think. They certainly sell 6mm and up square shanks for CCMT style inserts.

Martin,

Could be a browser issue. I had a similar problem ordering a Howell plan using Firefox. Everything went through fine using Chrome.

I think I remember from my dim and distant past that there was a preference in electrical engineering to use even BA sizes and in mechanical engineering to use odd BA sizes- or it might have been the other way round.smiley

Jim.

5 BA and 7BA were favoured in model engineering because they happen to be be near enough 1/8" and 3/32" OD respectively. LBSC used them a lot in his designs.

In my experience it will work fine installed in a steel gear.

Thread: Randa b nose thread

Lathes don't tend to have nose threads that fit within the confines of the standard fastening ranges. It's almost certain that the thread will be a 55 degree 1" x 12tpi. If you are looking for a tap then I'm afraid you are probably out of luck.

Thanks for the comments guys. The current carb does have an air bleed. I've just downloaded Jerry Howell's 2 jet drawings so I'll have a go at making that. Oh, and the fuel tank is way too small, it's a thirsty beast.

Cheers,

Rod

Update. Here's the carb and fuel tank I've made. At the moment it's too rich on idle and starved on full throttle - If it's running ok at tick over it dies when I open it up. I might have to look for a more sophisticated carb design.

It's not been straightforward progress. The grip on one side of the crank pin has been slackening, causing the whole assembly to twist and sieze. I replaced the hardened crank pin with un-hardened silver steel and drilled half and half to insert a screw but this didn't stop a small amount of rotation which was enough for the assembly to skew when running. This is quite a powerful engine. One side of the crank pin holds very well with the clamping screw so I have Loctited all the others. By loosening the "good" grip the assembly can still be separated to free the con rods if necessary.

I needed to make a wide trough in these lumps of cast iron. Having chewed out the trough I didn't fancy the next 3 hours getting rid of the rest of the material

So I thought I would try and saw it out with my Lidl bandsaw, which responded to the challenge with aplomb

vice trough2.jpg

Then tidied it up in the mill

So what's it for? I've tried making my own free vice to give me some more headroom. Although my attempt worked OK in this situation it was otherwise poor at holding lumps.

This is the "Gack" free vice from Hemingway. Works a treat - the pivoting jaw makes all the difference. I had to change the hold down bolts from M10 to 8 to suite my T slots.

Right, that's got the tool-making out of my system for a bit. A major cast iron clean up is required now.

Many [most, if not all] of the Chinese sellers on ebay have an arrangement where ebay collects the VAT at the time of purchase … Those items should flow through the system without any difficulty.

Having, in a recent thread, extolled the design of the Hemingway depth stop for the Myford lathe, I thought it about time I had one. I was disappointed that the carriage would not slide over the T bar when made according to the drawing even though my S7 is not a power cross feed version. Using this button that screws into the 2BA rack fastening I was able to work out the maximum size of T bar that could be accommodated, both in diameter and projection:

And by turning down the head of the 2BS socket screw slightly I was able to work out that I could just about get a T bar design that would allow the carriage to pass:

Thread: CNC MILLING MACHINE Denford Micromill
06/04/2023 12:13:34

Jason has fingered me as a Micromill expert. However, my Micromill was built in 2002 and has been through several changes. The Denford software (VR milling 5) still seems to be current. It will do 2 1/2 D milling natively but Fusion 360 has a Denford post processor which will export Gcode for full 3D. The Sherline it is based on is a small machine. 6mm absolute maximum endmill size. The machine itself is constructed from hard anodized aluminium alloy. It is a nice little machine but barely robust enough for the small scale model engineering I do. I do not think that it is anything like robust enough for a shared workspace. In my view people will always want to extend the working envelope way beyond its capabilities and break it.

Looking at the Denford website the VMC 1300 is a much more suitable machine but how much does it cost? 15 years ago when I bought a Novamill for work they were £15k. ARC and Axminster have dropped theire CNC mills and googling around there is very little available. A Syil X5 at £25k plus is the cheapest I can find.

I enjoy Jason's posts on using his CNC machine but, unless one is prepared to undertake the conversion of a manual machine, I think CNC is probably beyond the pockets of most of us.

Steve's Rexon looks to be similar to my 16mm Jet, which is a pain to change belt speeds. I changed my motor to 3 phase with VFD and don't regret it, much more convenient. The ability to slow start, or even go in reverse when centering on existing holes is very useful.

Thread: Fash?
30/03/2023 21:56:52
Posted by Peter Greene 🇨🇦 on 30/03/2023 21:24:33:

My OED gives one meaning of "fash" as:

"A rough edge or ridge left on nails, cast bullets, etc"

It gives a second meaning as:

"A fringe; anything resembling a fringe".

Can't argue with that but not, I think, in common usage globally. Perhaps retained locally as a dialect term and, as such, to be treasured. I can't help thinking that if used in an exam answer it would be marked down as a spelling mistake

I've always used the term "flash" to apply to those thin bits of metal or plastic that squeeze out between the two halves of a casting mould and stick to the casting itself along the parting line. Definately not a burr which is a result of a failure to get a clean cut, usually caused by a very thin piece of the job bending out of the way rather than being cut by the tool.

I've only ever heard "fash" being used by a worried Scots person.
