> That would make M.E. one of the longest running publications in the world. Not bad! There are plenty of UK publications over 200 years old, mostly newspapers. Neil I am led to believe that Model Engineer is the olderst hobby magazine in the world. I have never had it proved otherwise. Does anyone know any different? Diane |

I PM'd you Bob. It was deleted in error this morning ... bit of a slip-up you understand. Thank you for putting it back. I am very glad you like this issue. It is good to be appreciated sometimes. One person here thinks ME is going to the dogs and makes a point of saying so to anyone who will listen (never directly to me of course) but I genuinely think that person is in the minority judging by the unsolicited feedback I get ... and fortunately not many people do listen anyway - ha ha. There's an awful lot of thought goes into planning each issue these days. I am very grateful for some terrific writers and the work of our designer, Yvette. I think 4467 was a particularly nice cover. What do others think? Diane |

Back in the day the full size engines were done in situe with a planing machine that bolted to the cover studs and was hand cranked back an forth, the recess either end giving the tool something to run out into.
Back in the day ???? I have actually done this job on a full size engine. Not the regulator but the valve face. My does it make yer arm ache!! ... ha ha... Diane

Thread: What is happening to this site ? |
07/10/2013 11:08:46 |
Bob You are right - this site does have a phenomenal knowledge base amongst its member but take heart - not everyone with knowledge has disappeared. One or two have wandered recently but I doubt their absence wil be noticed. It has come about, I think, due to some recent changes made at MTM - and you know what changing anything can do.... God forbid...! Please don't get things out of proprotion. A quick glance at all the live topics just now should reassure you that there is a still a very large number of helpful, keen and generous members, willing to help anyone and everyone. Unsung heroes, the lot of 'em. I am very proud of them all. |

It would have been nice to have been asked if you could use my photograph, I would have obliged, being one of the old school I was brought up on "Manners maketh Man", and "Courtesy costs nothing", it is obvious that these qualities are not to be found with the ME publishing. I think Harold Hall had the right idea, I think I shall join him. Gray, Gray, please advise which is the offending photograph. It will be removed. Diane |
Thread: Why is this site so negative ? |
04/10/2013 13:21:42 |
I have noted that threads of technical merit, shall we say, where a sensible question is asked and a string of sensible answers and suggestions follows, is, in the main, contributed to by a different set of people than those that prefer to contribute to the rights and wrongs of the new look website, the social media question and the quality of the special issue. Thanks Neil for yet another sensible post above. Just my observations ... Diane |

Gotta be the worst special edition I have ever had the misfortune to waste money on! NEVER AGAIN!!!!
I believe there are still half a dozen copies of the 2012 '300 Years of the Steam Engine' Special. Now that was a good book....!!!! |

The older issues were very absorbing but after 1950 or so they became very repetitive.
Somebody once said to me - you can look at Issues 1 to 10 of Model Engineer and you've probably covered everything. Well, I'm not sure that's quite correct. I think there was something in issue 12.... |

M.E. - I have never bought this magazine as model locos are not high on my list of interests and as it seems this is all that appears on the cover (apart from the odd clock) it doesn't attract me - and I know I'm not the only one. errr... the last ten covers .... One loco Are you looking at the one that says MODEL ENGINEER at the top....? I don't know... give a magazine a bad name..... Diane

looking back through this thread im seeing the majority of answers are saying that MEW is the right place for an article like this. But obviously that doesnt have any bearing on the matter. Its going in ME no matter what anyone says.
Really? You obviously know more than me. Mind you, I'm only the Editor... Can I just remind all readers that I am not responsible for MEW and have no say in, or responsibility for, its content. The two are completely independent magazines. The purpose of this thread is to gauge the acceptibility of an article for Model Engineer only. Diane |

I was hoping that I would not get a negative response from those who only take Model Engineer for the model making aritcles and would be averse to such an article. Contrary to my expectations, I don't think anyone has expressed that view. Diane
Thats because I am too nice to say it I can put up with the odd couple of pages that you have introduced recently but would not want to see more. As for all those that say thay want to see the article yet also say they feel MEW is going down hill would this not be the type of article that could bring it back from the edge rather than more variations on tool height gauges, vice modifications etc?
J A fair enough comment, Jason, and it might be more representative than has come across so far. This is what I am trying to establish. Although I think that if it were to run it would have to be, as I said, every other issue at most, with 'one-off' Workshop Topics in the alternates. Model making is always going to be the primary concern of Model Engineer, don't worry. We also have some first rate model making series on the stocks. It's a struggle to fit it all in these days! Hi CB That's a reasonable idea. Maybe once we get our new website template an intro would make a good website article. I'll think on that, thank you. Diane |
11/09/2013 22:19:58 |
Many thanks all for your considered responses. i am delighted to see they are, in the main, positive. Further comments would be welcome but for now, once again, thanks to those who have taken the time to post. Diane

I am posting this as a bit of an experiment. I would like to try to gauge the reaction to a proposed construction series. I am mindful that only a very small percentage of the readership partakes in this forum and also that if the reaction here is completely negative and I decide to run it anyway I will never hear the end of it. Anyway... here goes: The writer is known to us and his work is thorough and clear. Diane |
Thread: Pocketmags publication date? |
06/09/2013 14:11:20 |
The (so far unconfirmed) answer is that digital issue should be availalble at the same time as the paper subscribers' issue, not the 'on sale' date, but this is currently being checked out. I will report back when I know more. It's early days I suppose... Diane |
